Hi!

I'm looking for a new fixed blade to buy as a Xmas gift to myself! :D

It will be used as an outdoor/survival/camping knife. I narrowed my choices to the Ranger RD7 and the RAT RC6.

Is 5160 as good as 1095? I only hear good thing about 1095.

Anyone has experience with both of these knives? How do they compare to each other?

Thanks for helping me make the right choice!

Ontario's (the makers of the RD7) heat treat is somewhat sketchy. RC is a better overall quality company. Plus they have the best warranty and the best 1095 I've ever used.

I purchased a RD7 recently. I am not impressed with the handle comfort as the slabs are sharp pointed on both the front and the back. The blade and overall quality is good.

The RD7 is a heavy thick knife made for chopping and general camp work while the RAT is less suited to chopping but would have more overall comfort on general purpose applications.

I guess it depends. I've never had, nor tried the Ontario Ranger Knives. I've had 6 or 7 different Ranger Knives made by Justin himself & currently have a custom RD6. Great knife. I forget the RC6's blade thickness, but IIRC, it's thinner than a RD6 (Which is a full 1/4" thick).

The RC6 is probably a better all around knife because it's not as heavy. But the RD6 is one stout FB, especially for its size.

The RC-6 is 3/16 thick and pretty svelte for its size, compared to the RD7. I'd go for the Rat, much more useful in the long run.

Get the rat, for sure. Forget about ontario. I had an rc-4 and an rc-5...GREAT knives. I had to sell them to pay some bills recently, but I am getting an Izula for xmas from my gf, and I am gonna try to convince some one to get me an rc-5 haha.

RAT Cutlery RC-6......it is a better product overall. Also, check out the warranty.....can't be beat.

the heat treat for the RDs is made according to mr. Gingrich's specs and I've not heard one bad comment about them. I haven't heard of any quality problems either. I have three RDs because they are infact awesome heavy duty blades. I think one would not go wrong with any of the Ranger Series knives.

Pre Ontario RD-series blades are wonderful knives, I don't know about the Ontario versions, thou I have an Ontario TAK-1 that has been thru hell and back and never an issue. The RC-6 is a great blade, and will handle most anything you throw at it.

For me the company, and it's policies make all the difference, and in that case, it is RC all the way.

I like knives by both companies, but if we are talking Original Rangers vs Rat 1095, I have to side with the 5160. Wicked knives, wonderful after a good convex is applied. They aren't pretty, but they don't give up an ounce in performance.
