So how do you find your RD series as a cutting blade. If you could, would you order it with thinner stock that 1/4 inch. Compared to say a RAT or RC series blade or similar.
I have RD6.
With bit of reprofiling it can get very sharp (and 5160 is very easy to sharpen and easily brought to fine edge). However cutting ability is determined by the thickness - so yes, if I were to buy it again, I'd definitely want thinner stock (e.g. 3/16" ~ 4.76mm).
Another positive side-effect would be reduced the weight... (mine is 459g without a sheath)
I have a rd6 as well. I use mine as a chopper and splitting small logs so for me the thickness is perfect.
I sharpen it at 20 degrees each side so it isn't the sharpest knife I own but it does what I need it to.
Sometimes the factory edge is not razor sharp, but you can put a razor edge on it very easily with some sandpaper and a leather strop. I find that the cut and slice very well, even with the thick spine. The flat grind makes a lot of cutting chores easier. I have even used it in the kitchen with no problems. Great knife, well worth the money.
If it's strictly cutting & no chopping will be needed, then yeah, you're probably better off with it being thinner. I like the RDs, but personally, my favorite Ranger is the RAK. In fact, I just got a custom one this week, W/O coating & has orange/black micarta scales.
