I got a shiv a while back as an "extra" in a trade. It was dull as could be and the coating was very thick and abrasive. The knife had a few of the usual "user dings" and the handle was wrapped strait around, no style. It sat for a while without use. I decided that it was taking up space without reason so my only options were to get rid of it or "fix" it. I stripped the coating with aircraft stripper, cut a notch at the bottom of the blade edge to aid in sharpening, re-wrapped the handle, and that patina is from use and exposure. I wipe the blade off when I use it or if it gets wet but the patina is all natural.

Thats a great extra to get, dang. Looks good dude, how sharp did you get it. You should do a review.......Justins knives rock!!

nice job... i have never been a fan of any kind of coating, on a knife...:thumbdn:

i have always liked the looks of those shivs.. i think they would make a great bushcraft knife...

the shiv looks like a neat blade to keep tucked away for emegencies, especially with that minimalist cordwrap to keep it slim.

Those are some great looking mods.

Noshtero and Ilbruche, did you do that work yourselves? I really like how they came out. Did either of you change the edge profile?

I rehandled mine and a friend of mine convexed it while he was making a new sheath for it.

This is what it used to look like.

ilbruche- would you be interested in making another set of shiv scales like that, or similar? if so, what would you charge? you can PM me if you'd prefer.

My work was all done by the man himself, Justin at Ranger Knives. I wanted the shiv to be a bushcraft blade exclusively, so I had a number of changes made to it.
1) I had the tip raised to add more of a belly
2) I had it scandi ground
3) I had thumb grooves added on the spine
4) I had the blade edge brought all the way back to the handle
5) I had micarta scales put on it

It has outperformed any bushcraft blade I've put it up against, at least for me. YMMV.

My Shiv is my go to knife now when I venture outdoors. I'm keeping the coating on for a bit till it starts to wear some then I'll strip it. Why I don't know. For some reason I can't do it now. Cool little knife.

I agree, the Shiv makes for a nice little bushcrafter. Justin can do a custom for you, and they will be in the lineup of production blades with Ranger/Ontario
