Stupid $%#@ search is just not working for me at all anymore..it iused to work 1/4 times. I dont think i've had a search work in weeks. Comon! This is just a forum running VBulletin software and I cant believe no one can fix or reinstall scripts or get someone to fix this thing given that is a supported, pay product. Given the size of this forum, the lack of searchable threads makes it a huge graveyard of forgotten conversations....Even if it means taking the forum down for a few days and reinstalling all the back end code that runs the site, it'd be worth it.

Sorry, rant off....this prolly belongs in whine and cheese or someplace else....but the lack fo seraching in our particular section is more damaging that others given the repeatability of many shoptalk questions....

I love BF, just hate the software sometimes....plus having a bad day at work and something snapped!

And worse the admins just send you off to the instructions for searching like you're too dumb to search. It doesn't work!

I have only ever had the search work one or two times the rest of the time it freezes up and does nothing or I get an error. I have tried all the tips in the thread in service and support and none of it helps.

After looking into it some here at work, and on the vbulletin.com support forum, all clues point towards a server problem, not software. It could be due to the post counts on the forum itself, but I find it hard to believe that the sever/software can't handle it. Who knows....Ive become accustomed to searching the forums using google, which is just plain silly but our only option until some admin gets on the hook with Vbulletin and their hosting company and iron out the issue.

I agree 100%!!!!!!!!!!

I readily admit I'm usually irritated at the "how do I make a knife" question posted freshly 3 times a day. I think, "Use the gaw-damn !#$%^!@#$ search retard!!!"

But I've tried using the search for several threads in the last couple months that I FREAKING KNOW EXIST and the search will tell me it's not responding. :jerkit:

Here's some tips: never use the word "steel" in your search term. Example: instead of 1095 steel use 1095 or 1095 heat treat. Also, if you just use one word, you probably won't get anything. But don't use more than four words. And don't use the search on a full moon or when Mars and Venus line up. :D

one way to get around the search engine is to save any posts you like in a seperate folder in your favorites list,That way you can just hunt your own little list of needed info.

As for the new guys that get in here and ask How to?????? Heck that is what this part of the forum is all about, when new you dont know exactly what to ask so you dont know what to search:o Years ago if I would have only wanted to tell someone once how to do something there is allot of people on this forum that would have come on here new and got told "hey look it up in the search engine" but instead they got all the help they needed I personally know a allot of makers here that would always answer the new guys question to the best of there knowledge and would do so for every new guy that asked, and did this with a big smile and the knowledge that they were able to help someone out.Yes I agree after all these years that it gets tough to answer the same old question time and again but hey that is what we do here,The reason I don't post as much as before is that others have now taken up my slack and answered the questions before I could and thus I didnt see any reason to say the same thing again.
So please be nice to the new guys and nicely explain how to use the search engines or give them a link to the thread that will answer the question,or better yet just answer there question and make a new life long friend!

Sorry to rant a little here.

The search engine has always worked for me when I needed it and I am on a old slow puter with dial up .

Sometimes there actually is a problem with the search database and Spark can fix that when he finds out about it. On the other hand, we have >50,000 members now, and out of that number there are many who haven't read the FAQ yet, and others who will never be able to use the search function because they don't have the necessary equipment. They can't understand that a search for "Spyderco Delica" doesn't work and a search for just "Delica" does no matter how many times you explain it to them, because they just don't have any brains.

When there is an actual problem the way we find out about it is someone goes to Bladeforums Service & Support and posts a bug report explaining what he searched for and what happened. Then (if it's not "I searched for 'steel' and my keyboard exploded") Spark can identify the problem and fix it. But if you only say "It doesn't work" ... well, you might not be mentally retarded, but there's no way anyone can tell....

There is a constant background count of people who say "It doesn't work" (or "It sucks" or similar noninformative complaints) but it's been quite a while since we've had an actual bug report. If you think there's an real bug, post a real bug report, in Bladeforums Service & Support where Spark will see it.

I for one who works with developemental dissabilties takes offense with any one who uses retard publicly.Regardless of what this thread is about,I feel manners should be upheld. In particular if you are a moderator.:( :( :( :(

Uh... "developemental dissabilties" should be spelled "developmental disabilities", Mr. P.C.;)
Mr. Cougar Allen, aren't Rants supposed to be in W&C?
Please move it there so we can properly offend some sensibilities...:D

Hmmmm. You guys have me curious now. I find that the search function works okay, but it is EXTREMELY finicky. Being in the biz, so to speak, I can tell you that the search-fu is weak on this board, but it does work. Do not try to use Boolean logic and keep your terms to a single word whenever possible. Try and pick a word that is relatively unusual and select a search that covers the title and message body. Select a specific user name if you know it. Do not make your words too short either or it will error out. Sometimes I have to play with it a bit, but I have always been able to find what I am looking for.
