Does anyone know of a site to purchase rare earth magnets cheap? I used to have one and can't locate it again. They were reclaimed from computers I think, about 35 cents a piece. Thanks.

Tom, I don't know on the reclaimed magnets. But if you are looking to make a magnet to hold the blade/tang against platens/discs, get in touch with Rade Hawkins. He sells one that is REALLY powerfull, and small. I think it's about $12.00+ shipping. Got a handle on it and everything.

I was able to get a pair out of a dead hard disk drive. The ones that I got are about 1 1/2 x 3/4 x 1/8 inch and are shaped like a segment of a washer (a bent rectangle). They were held on with a bit of glue so some force is required to get them out.

I got the dead disk drive free from the guy who maintains the computers at work. Try asking around at the various computer stores (clone shops) that build up the system to your specifications.

It was actually kind of fun taking the disk drive apart.

Hope this helps.

I have seen them on Ebay too. I have heard of sewing them into a pouch type sheath to hold the knife in better. They would have to be the powerful thin ones.

Tom, a few years ago my brother and I stripped a few mainframes and disk drives and I have a couple parts out of the drives that have some serious magnets on them. The magnets are glued on and I haven't been able to unglue them without breaking the magnet, but if you have a saw you could cut it apart enough to use them. If you want one I'll send it to you for the postage, just let me know.

The magnets are kind of brittle. I got the magnets off by using a pair of channel-lock pliers and slowly applying pressure to shear the glue joint. A bit of the magnet stayed stuck to the metal bracket but none of them broke.
