Greetings All,
Well, I probably could have posted this in a couple different places, but as the most recent highlight is the custom sheath, I figured here would be a good spot.
The knife (my avatar) is a Nexus Centurione, 1 of 74 that was made for the Nexus expedition group. The maker, Molletta (a member here) was a member of the group. The Centurione is made in A8 modified tool steel hardened at 57 hrc, Handle is in MISO1 a certified high quality glass fiber material. The ergos and balance are excellent, and it is near perfect profile/size for a 'larger' sized general purpose field camp knife IMHO. It carries its full spine thickness to up near the tip to ensure a strong blade the full length. The full height grind should make for a decent cutter considering the thickness. The handle is a very comfortable 'taco style' with a full guard to ensure that that hand shouldn't slip forward onto the considerably sharp blade.
I also really like the distinctive profile of this blade. It is one of those that people just tend to go 'Whoa'
when then they see it. Not because its big and 'tacticool,' but just do to the overall profile and grind appearance. It's pretty dang' cool'
to say the least. I'd say Mr. Molletta has the true artistic eye that translates exceptionally well to the steel canvas.
There are several videos out there of these knives taking some serious abuse, being pounded into rocks and what not
. Definitely a 'tough' fixed blade to say the least.
The one drawback is the knife came to me sans sheath. Since I'm not one to walk around with a big ol' fixed blade in my hand when tramping through the woods, I had to fix that. Fortunately there's a local maker not to far from me that has is starting to refocus his leather/tack skills more into the knife arena. As the Centerione is a fairly unique profile/height/thickness of blade, it was going to require basically a hand-made sheath. The maker was able to take my input/ideas/specs and incorporate some of his own personal touches to make this sheath a reality. In particular not the detachable firesteel loop and striker carrier. I've not seen this arrangement anywhere else.
In any event, thought I'd share.
Happy holidays,
