I am just wondering what some of the rare Spyderco models are. Models that were discontinued quickly, old ones, prototypes, and others. What rare models do you have?
What rare models do you know about?

A really interesting spydie I have heard about is a small model without a hole that had a LED light built into the handle. I guess it was discontinued in 1997.

What are your interesting stories?

I think the old Spyderco's have a lot of appeal. I bought all of the custom collaborations in the early 90's. The Terzuola when it still had hard anodized aluminum handles. The Goddard when it still had deep green/brown micarta handles. The Tuff-Ram Civilian, the Centofante with green Kraton inserts, etc, etc.

The rarest one I had, and I kick myself now and again for not keeping it, was one I can't remember the name. It was like a Mariner, but it had a notch in the spine of the blade that a fisherman could use to cut his line, without opening the blade. Sort of like a miniature gut hook. What was that one called again?

Wire Edge,

I think you may be referring to the Pre-Diver with the line cutter blade and ruler on one side. There were I think 3 Spyderco dive styles.
My favorite oldies are the Jess Horn with Jigged Bone scales, Ti- Peter Herbst, plain edge tuffram Civilian and the Ying-Yang cricket.

Yes, it was the pre-diver (one was just sold on Ebay last week)

I have two Spyderkeys (Hummingbirds) which are a miniature worker which was made in something like 9 scale material variations. I have the black-lip pearl and the Stag-handle Spyderkeys.

Others would:

Ti Herbst (most were thrown away due to production problems)
Jess Horn C27 with jigged bone
TufRam Cricket
TufRam Worker
Pre-Diver
Probe
TufRam Co-Pilot
CF Cricket and Dragonfly

there are other odd ball ones as well as foreign market versions that are not "rare" per se, but aren't generally available in the US.

I think the one with the LED light was a G-Sakai Hotaru .

I don't really have any rare ones right now though, but when my cousin orders my G-10 Harpy and my Starmate I wil have some sorta rare ones :) :p

I have owned almost every Spyderco that was made and still have a few rare ones in my collection. I still have these:
Pre-Diver
Probe
Mini Probe
P.I.G. Police
Several Hummingbirds and Spyderkeys
Green Rescue
Yellow Catcherman
Grey Matriarch
Bladeforums Native
Plainedge Tuffram Aluminum Civilian
Yellow Rescue
Worker #003 (the third Spyderco ever made)
Evolution Set
Black Worker
18 different Q's
CF Ladybug
CF Dragonfly
CF Cricket
Green Ladybug
Pink Ladybug
Military w/out blade markings
Almite Crickets (3)
Aluminum Worker
Several older thin handle Workers
"knock off" Standard. These were made to sell for around $25. They had a pocket clip that was stamped out instead of attached with screws. I have one and I have only seen one other.
I know I have more but I just can't remember them.

Others that I have owned in the past (and wish I had back):
Lefty P.I.G. Police
Carbon Fiber Walker
Green Endura
Green Delica
Red Endura
Pink Delica (old one with molded in clip)
Blue Delica (the old one)
Black blade Delica
Black blade Endura
Black blade Military
Carbon fiber prototype Military
Oh, there are so many more that I can't remember right now :(

I have one of these G-Sakai's NIB, that I can post a scan of or if anybody is interested in I could be traded out of. They made them in yellow with black accents and black with yellow, both with red LEDs. The NIB one is black with yellow. Uses a small black thumbstud to open the blade.

In my stash of somewhat rarer ones, I have:
- Pink Delica PE, integral clip
- Blue Delica SE, intergral clip NIB
- Pink Ladybug PS, NIB
- black-blade Endura SE

Wish that I would have kept the green handled Endura, black-bladed Delica, Spur and alum handled Civillian..... :(

<edited to dry the tears off>

I have the alum. Civilian, but that is the only rare one that I have. Might try to find a Ti Herbst, but I am spending alot on some Tom Mayo's this year.

Michael,
Thats some collection!

I have one of those "knockoff" standards you mention but it's a lefty. If I recall it was originally called the "Economy". You don't see many around at all.
A few of my other rare spydies are:

an original lefty Co-Pilot with Brass liners and with the lock formed from the backstrap, Sal Glesser stated that the lock got to be too expensive since the backstrap had to have 2 seperate tempers.
The original SS harpys had this same lock type also in the beginning.

An aluminum/tuffram police model given to me by Sal Glesser during World Cup 94 engraved with my name.

Prototype Ocelot.

And my favorite, a "Ground Zero" orange rescue given to me by Sal and Joyce at Spyderco.

Of all the great mysteries--including what really happened at Roswell--the one I would really like to know the truth about is: The location of that trash bin where Sal dumped all of those "defective" Ti Herbst knives. ;)

Unless you have the COMPLETE early David Yellowhorse Spyder collection;), you don't REALLY have a Spyder collection!

Mike has one of the best collections, (including some of my old ones and I, some of his!:)), that I know of. Can you believe original Worker #3? That's saying something!

Spyderco has SO MANY collectibles it's incredible! My personal favorites are the Spyderkeys. I'm still trying to get all of them, (scale materials). I have one of the very first ones, (all stainless), and it's my favorite Spyder.

Dave, you reminded me, I have the Ocelot 007 and I have owned a few brass liner Copilots. Another rare one that comes to mind is the Executive. It looked like the Hunter but in a smaller package. I also have:
Pink plainedge ladybug
Black plainedge ladybug
yellow plainedge ladybug
blue plainedge ladybug
red plainedge ladybug

Forgot about those. They are pretty cool and very hard to find. I think they were made for the Japanese market.

Gene, thanks for the compliment. I "use to" have a nice collection, now its just ok. I had over 150 different Spydies at one time, wish I still had them.
michael :D

I don't know that they would be considered rare but I do have OD green Ladybug, Delica & Endura models. My one Spydie that I think is fairly rare is an aluminum police model, non-tufram coated, with flush (not domed) pins, and w/o "Police" blade etching.

These are some great stories. Spyderco has to be one of the most interesting knife companies around!
Keep 'em coming!

The G Sakai imported Hotaru was named the "Firefly". Yellow light "button" on black handles and black on yellow. Either with a red LED and easily replaceable bulb and battery. Actually a very functional palm sized folder that can be surprisingly easy to open with one hand... via THUMB STUD!

Had at one short time a completely blackened serrated Police and a completey blackened serrated Endura. I also understand that plain edge Snap Its with red handles/ black inserts are quite rare.

i had a black blade plain edge millie at one time, and someone stole my backpack out of my car and got the millie, and a term paper i had almost finished, along w/books, etc

at the time i was more upset about the term paper, i dont think i paid that much for the knife - was always gonna replace it, but have never seen a black blade millie since

have also had joht singh khalsa, starmate, and a full size centofante

I would have loved to get a non serrated aluminum Cricket, i grabed the last serrated at the time and asked the store to get me one of the others only to find them no longer available.

I've seen a number of people post the tuffram coated Civilian, but I have an early version of the serrated Civilian that has the plain Aluminum handles (non-Tuffram coated).
(Bought it after seeing the Civilian for the first time when it was featured in a Blade magazine. Gotta love those impulse buys!)
Does anyone know how many of the non-Tuffram coated Civvies were made???

Regards,
Mike

Flash,

You have one of the original Civilians before the tuffram coated version was made available.

I don't know the number of uncoated aluminum Civilians, But I do know they are quite rare. Very nice knife!
