What is the single rarest Spyderco ever
produced. Any help would do. I'm just
curious and would like to know what to
look for. Would be great to find it in
some small store for far below what it
is worth yeah like that would ever
happen. Thanks for any help you guys and
gals can offer.

I have found that the P.I.G. Police model
and the Pre-Diver are probably two of the rarest of them all. I was lucky and picked them both within a month of each other and for about half of their value.
I seen each for sale up to $600.00 and have heard of them going for more. I even have the P.I.G. in the left hand model which is even more rare. There are a couple more that are hard to find but they show up from time to time. Maybe Sal and Danelle can add to this.

Boy, this is a good question, I can think of a couple of different models, but I'm just not sure. Knifeslinger has some colored "Q"'s I've never seen anywhere else. I will have to get with Susan in the morning and see what she has to say.

There are only two carbon-fiber Police models. Do those count? I suppose if we open the door to prototypes this question will get nowhere fast. I considered taking a Police model apart and fitting it with carbon-fiber scales, but this seemed somehow immoral because of the factory-made ones. Would it be, or am I thinking too hard?

Corduroy thinking too hard? Is the pope Catholic? Does a bear...oh nevermind, we know he's always thinking too hard.

OK, I did receive some answer on this....
Apparently the rarest production knife anyone can remember is the David Yellow Horse. Less than 500 were produced and sold. Everyone that I asked about it today said "Oh yea, I remember that knife..that was bee-u-tiful!"
Hope that helps...
Danelle

This is the first I`ve ever heard of a Yellow Horse Spyderco! Does anyone have a pic they could post? (or even a good description of what it looked like)

Corduroy, what makes the G-10 Police model rare? I just bought one this weekend from a going out of business knife dealer at a gun show. I paid $90. It is so stiff I can bearly thumb it open I was thinking about trying to smooth it out, maybe I should leave it alone?

Mike-Great thread!

Bobby-What exactly is a Pre-Diver? I have had both large and small Dive Probes, (still have a small), and was curious. I know Sal is a diver and was wondering if these are something that might pre-date the Diver's Probe? Thanks.

Bill-I think Drew said "Carbon Fiber" Police models, not G-10.

Um, I was talking about carbon-fiber, not G-10 (which uses glass-fiber).

I have a G-10 Police model and it is also rather stiff. I'm still trying different tricks to loosen it up, but I think it will just take time and wear. A very nice knife, though.

Item #121696199 on Ebay was a David Yellow Horse Spyderco, went for $380 on 6/29/99

I didn't grab the picture, but the description was:

Here is an early knife done by Dave Yellowhorse It is a Spyderco Hunter model done in 1989 (10 years ago) This model has a 2 7/8" serrated blade. It is 6 5/8" long open. The handle is done on one side with mother of pearl , turquoise , red coral , onyx and iron wood. The Spyderco emblem set in the ironwood on the end is nickel silver. The back side of the knife is stainless steel and is marked " by Dave Yellohorse " with a serial number 70 and it has a pocket clip. He did less than 100 of these. Yellow horse collectors don't get many opportunities to buy one of these.

Gene,
The Pre Diver is a large Stainless steel folder with a blade just like the Probe. It has the drying vent and a bail (lanyard) on the end.

Greetings Bobby. Presumeably you have both at your disposal. What is the OAL of both when opened and closed? Thanks.

I seem to remember those in the American Rifleman;didn`t buy one, however.

I have a David Yellowhorse Police model. I believe the number is 167 or 176.

Danelle, of the 500 Yellowhorse knives do you have a breakdown on the models? I have the Police and the e-bay knife was a Hunter. Which other models did he do? Also do you know if the number on the knife is based on that particular model or if it is based on the total number of Spydercos he did?

TIA

Jim, that was the whole set. David yellowhorse made about 185 each of three models; Police, Hunter & CoPilot. 50 of each went to Japan. The balance went all over the rest of the world.

David signed an exclusive contract with Buck knives and had to cancel our association.

We then went to Santa Fe Stoneworks for the "exotic" models. We quickly learned that we could get the product to the ELU considerably cheaper if we just sold product to santa Fe Stoneworks and got out of the middle...which we did.

They in turn have refined and developed intricate combinations of exotic materials into remarkable designs. I personally use them for producing "special" Spyderco's for gifts, etc.

Sal (aka "Hall of Fame dude")-

At one time I had a complete set of SFSW "spider web" Spydercos w/ matching serial #'s. Should of held on to them.

But, as you can probably relate, I am bound to carry only one brand of knife for the duration. (But, I can still still admire & lust over others!)

Nakano,

Sorry for the slow response. The Pre Diver has a 4 7/8 blade (actually the same blade that is in my Large probe). It has a 4 3/4
handle and is 8 1/2 overall. It has the drying vent and has tip down carry and it has a ruler. I hope that this helps.
