I had one large rasp file cut in half made two nights with one knife was considerably smaller than the other and didn't take much work to put an edge and get a nice little knife out of it was pretty hard to start with the other was quite large so I heat treated it and tempered it and the one I heat treated and tempered I leave on the workbench and it looks the same when I came back the other one when I come back or if I left it in the shed is all rusty the next morning same piece of Steel is it because of the heat treat

It is not really the "same" steel anymore is it? You did something to one that you did not do to the other.

Think about it.

And I was checked out your YouTube page liked it was described but wasn't seeing anything similar your stuff's really nice I just started making knives maybe a year ago my grandpa passed away and that's what he did so I got all his stuff and I was just wondering why one half of my knife made from file rust overnight and the other one does not and they're made from the same piece of metal

Yeah I understand that much of it was just unsure and could not get any info as far as heat treating or tempering preventing it from rusting any info would be greatly appreciated

Maybe you forgot to clean the one which don t rust after HT :) It is only reason which make sense to me ............:D

I deleted the poll for language. I assume the spelling and other terms are a language barrier. I'll leave the thread open for know since I think you really want help.

There is no way to take a steel with no chromium, nickel or moly and make it stain resistant. The level of polish will help, but knives made from rasps are not stain resistant.

I'm thinking the same thing as what Natlek said, maybe there was still some oil on the blade from heat treating (from oil quenching) that helped to keep it from rusting, or maybe some of the scale or even tempering oxides (where you see the color change from bronze to purple to blue etc.) could have helped protect it a bit, that is if you didn't already sand or grind it all off. In any case, I wouldn't worry about it as there are a number of factors that could've lead to one developing rust and the other one not simply because it's not a controlled environment with everything being equal.

It's an easy issue to fix, all you need to do to protect your carbon steel blades is to make sure they're dry from any moisture (water) and then just apply a light coat of oil over the entire blade with a paper towel, so just make sure to do that next time you're working on a knife. When I'm done working on a knife for the night I always apply at least light coat of oil since I leave them out in my shop overnight, which isn't insulated or heated. When I come back the next day to begin working again, if for some reason I don't want any oil on the knife, such as if I'm about to epoxy on the handle scales etc, I can simply clean it off with some dish soap and water and then with some denatured alcohol, at least that's what I do what I wan't the steel to be completely clean from any oils of residue.

Sorry to hear about your grandpa's passing. It's nice you were able to inherit his knife making tools and are putting them to use as well. Keep us posted with what you're working on, there are plenty of guys here that are able and willing to help with any problems you encounter or just to answer any questions you have. Also, here is the link to use in order to properly search through Bladeforums to see if there are any past threads which may have already addressed what you are trying to figure out, which many of us find to be very useful: https://cse.google.com/cse?cx=012217165931761871935:iqyc7cbzhci

In your comment I'm quite not sure if you were talking about my Youtube channel and my older knives shown on it, but if so thanks for the kinda words. By the way, what country or are from, if you don't mind me asking, and what kind of tools do you have access to for your knife making?
