I recently purchased my second Rat 1 and was wondering if the Aus-8 they use is Japanese imported or Taiwanese made.
Any insight would be helpful, thanks.

From all the Taiwan steel imports, roughly 50% is from Japan. Over 80% of Taiwan made steel is carbon steel.

So, most likely Japanese AUS-8, but only manufacturer can tell for sure.

Knowing absolutely nothing about blade steel, I ask this with the most sincere respect. What difference does it make? Again, not being disrespectful, just trying to understand what it means by either answer. Is one better than the other, more durable, etc?

I'm going to echo the same as this_is_nascar.

Taiwan does wonders with AUS8, as does Japan. Either way its a great steel for sure!

Don't worry, its a fair question:D. Its mostly just because I'm curious and like to know everything about the knife that I own. Ive googled and didn't find any answers to my question thus bringing it up here. And yes, AUS-8 is a great steel for sure!

You make a good point my friend, but your also right about the manufacturer verifying it.

Thanks. I can certainly understand and appreciate that.

Here's what Toooj had to say:

OKC/M1 GarandGuy,

The AUS 8 steel that is supplied in our knives comes from Japan. AUS 6, 8, 10 are proprietary steel made by the Aichi Steel Corp. AUS 6, 8, 10 corresponds to AISI 440 A, B and C designation. Taiwan is able to get that steel for their knife production.
Hope this helps.

So, what does this mean in English?

Thanks!

AUS8 is a robust(tough) stainless steel , can sharpen it into very very thin edge and do not worry about chipping ,very cool steel for all-round folder.

And have to say that the retention of aus8 is not sooooo high , but good enough for my needs.

My Ontario 1 is a hell of a knife for $20.00 dollars. Aus - 8 is a really great steel considering the amount of money it costs. It sharpens up real easy, reprofiling is easy, polishes up nice, but it also dulls quickly under heavy use, rolls on impacts, and worst quality I've experienced and my only true complaint is how it rusts. I'm pretty good to my knives, usually wipe them off after use and oil them regularly enough. I've never had a single knife rust on me, including a 1095 EDC. Aus - 8 is the only steel I've had rust. Other than that great budget steel and I love my Ontario 1 and have beaten mine to death and it's still well and with us. With slight surface rust.
