RAT 1 Folder, and its possible RC successor

I have heard that you at RAT are not too happy with ontario's RAT 1, especially since it is made overseas. I understand your desire to produce an American made product, but the quality of my RAT 1 seems to be okay so far.

I am curious about a few things: was RAT involved in the design of the knife? Is there an RC folding knife in the works, and if so will it still be 1095 (I would also assume G10 or micarta scales)?

I have always wanted a carbon steel folder, but have never come across anything special in carbon.

There is currently no RAT folder actively in the works, though I would imagine some day it's almost certain to happen. Speculation would point towards 1095, micarta, and hopefully frame-lock. but this topic has been a little beaten to death, and gets brought up rather often.

The RAT folder design is listed as being owned by RAT Cutlery on their site, which would stand to reason it was probably designed by them, I don't know who specifically.

Jeff has stated that if it comes down to producing knives over sea's he'd rather just stop making knives. Though he wont ever admit it, im sure he's "not happy" with Ontario making them in the first place regardless of where.

Munky,,,,I am not raggen on you, because i have been guilty of this myself in the past.....I think since we are fortunate enough to have Jeff and Mike so active on this forum we should probably stop trying to guess what they think and let them answer for themselves.....I too have made assumptions on their feelings towards Ontario only to have Jeff politely tell me I was dead wrong.....I know you mean well, but I feel our assumptions help keep this non-topic around.......hope I am not comeing off as an ass....just saying....

who you an ass ;) LOL but Drew is correct..
topic of the folder has been beaten up so bad and people claiming they would like this or that..... RAT Guys are making a folder ,she is in the works.... who know when or where but the folder will pop up soon

"RC-10" and the machette are up and going plus the ultimate kit that's comming out that these guys have a lot on their plates. Designing knives and then testing them takes time. I'm guessing that they arnt going to rush and put some hastily designed pos out there, its gotta be tough and no bs

I guess you're right, I hate when people put words in my mouth. Though he probably purposely avoids these "When is RAT making a folder" threads by now. I do realize I just did it again but seriously, I think he does.

and honestly, how would he be "happy" about the Ontario event.

A folder comeith my friends....

Doubt it will be 1095.

Jeff did in fact design the RAT 1.

There were some quality issues with a few batches of the RAT. 1 but overall, it's a good design and not a bad folder for the price.

Personally, I have my last folder up for trade. The Izula has taken over that spot.

When the new RAT folder comes out I'll try it out of course but it would have to be really special to get my Izula out of my pocket.

I am not going to try to figure out whether he is happy or not..........I just know that it would get old if everyday someone reminded me of a fight I had with someone who used to be my friend......I realize it is not exactly the same thing, but it is the closest analogy I could think of.....I know gossip makes for good conversation, but I think with all they do for us the customer/forum members we could cut'em some slack and let that one alone for a while..........Drew

p.s. Like i said earlier I have done the same thing in the past so I am not bashing you......

The Izula has also replaced my folder, except I still (and will more than likely will always) carry a SAK.

My edc folder was either a kershaw leek or nrg. Now I either carry my BK-11 or my RC-3.

A SAK (either a Cybertool 34, Climber, or Compact) is almost always carried along in the pocket (unless the 1% of the time that I feel like Leatherman).

If/when there's an RC folder, I'd be sure to pick it up. It would either be that or an Sebenza (probably the RC due to cost).

I forgot that. I always, everyday, have a leatherman wave on my belt. It never leaves my side. I very rarely use the blades on it and keep the edge thinned out and crazy sharp. The fully serrated blade has been handy from time to time cutting things like hose, thick rope and siding where a PE blade would dull quickly.

I love my leatherman tools almost as much as I love my RAT blades.

When I do carry, I carry my Charge Ti on the belt in its pouch; very rarely carried in the pocket (occasional shifting around) unless it had the removable pocket clip attachment. I never used the straight blade, always the serrated one; very handy.

For my SAKs I never use the large blade (unless in the Compact; no small blade), just the small blade.

Izula across the back of my belt, Charge TTi at 9 o'clock (had to relocate to my weak side because I found it hard to reholster my phone with my left hand) and a Squirt S4 on my keychain... Yet I still wish I could carry a SAK and a folder as well :(

I have a few Rats.. I know some of the history between Rat and Ontario. I still love my Rat 1 folder. I'm sure Rat have mixed emotions about that knife. I mean they still designed it, then Ontario went nuts.

Anyhow, RAT 1 is my EDC. Love my Izulas, but a folder is just more practical for me to carry every day.
