Very impressed...I got the plain edge satin model with Coyote Brown scales. For the price ($38 delivered) I can't overstate the value of the knife. The build quality is excellent, centering is dead on and lockup in rock solid. The blade is a hefty slice of AUS8, and mine came razor sharp, I gave it a quick test on various papers I had around my office (printer, legal pad, post it, receipt) and it sliced like a laser. I like larger knives (over 3") and I was pleased to see how thick the blade stock is (I bought sight unseen). I paid a little extra for the brown scales, you can get the basic black for high $20s online. I went with brown because a) I didn't have a brown knife and b) I wear khaki or similar colored pants and shoes a lot so it kind of blends in with my wardrobe. All in all, a great value and I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a larger sized (3.6") folder for EDC use.

A funny side note...as I was doing my cut testing, a young man (college student) who interns with our firm came into my office to bring me a stack of papers (remember us lawyers used to get paid by the word!) and asked me what I was doing. I explained that it was a new knife etc. He said it looked "sick"...in the most frat boy brotastic kind of way...I guess that's a compliment??

*and before anyone says anything about sheeple, I work at a small law firm, I'm a partner, and our office staff don't fit the sheeple mold. We hire as much for personality traits as hard skills and someone like that just wouldn't fit in. After all, I keep a gun in my desk drawer.

Congrats! The RAT 1 is a fine knife.

Sounds like a great law firm, back in my youth I would have been proud to be a client of yours, God knows I had plenty of need back then for a criminal defense lawyer:D

Haha well thank you for the compliment but not exactly my area of expertise...we do employment law. Usually if I have a consultation with a client who also needs a criminal attorney there isn't much I can do! And yes, that has happened.

Would you recommend this knife? I've narrowed my choices down between this and the Victorinox Trekker, Thanks.

Yes, I would recommend it as a very good all around EDC type knife. That Victorinox you mentioned is much more than just a knife so I don't think they really should be compared.

The RAT 1 has a very large following here. I have one and it's a finely crafted folder.

The rat 1 quickly became my work edc. I work construction and it handles everything.

Is it normal for the blade to be fairly hard to open at first? I read everywhere about how fast it opens for a manual (like Spyderco) but mine is pretty slow at least as of now.

I keep hearing great things about this knife. I may have to break down and get one.

I also use my Rat 1 as a work knife, I've had mine for almost 2 years and it's never let me down.....It's one of those knives that every knife nut should have and I'm definitely adding another Rat 1 to my collection in the future, one of the ways I conclude what a good knife is is when I want to purchase a 2nd one.

How is it for opening and closing left handed? looks like the thumb-stud is a little more accessible for right handers.

Good question, I should have mentioned that it is about 90% ambi. Much like many Spyderco knives, the scales are a bit oriented for right hand use. That said, it is still very much accessible when used left handed, I wouldn't right it off because of being left handed.

I tried hard not to like this knife but failed miserably. For the 30 bucks or so you can hardly do better. It is a solid performer. One of the things that make it so great is that you aren't afraid to use it like you might with a much more expensive knife.

Thanks. I am actually right handed, but usually carry my pocket knife lefty, because my other pocket is full of "stuff".
