I just received my Ontario Rat 1 in the mail today. When I went to open it, it was extremely hard to open. I played around with the pivot screw a little, but that was not it. I have concluded that the ball detent is too high and is exerting too much pressure on the tang. Please let me know what you guys think and give me advice on how to fix this problem. Any help is greatly appreciated.

You can either send it back to ontario for repair/replacement, or you can take some fine grit sandpaper and fix the rough spot yourself

My Rat is a little tougher to open also, just got mine a week or so ago. I have not done it on this knife, but I have done it on a couple of other I own: I take the knife apart and get to the spot where the ball and detent mate up. I take a tiny rod shaped file, and work a tiny furrow at the point where ball exits the detent. This way the blade opens easier. If in doubt, do a little, put the knife together, test. Obviously if too much material is removed then the knife wont stay snug when closed, which is probably worse, since it could work open inside a pocket.

Simply opening/closing it and allowing it to break in could also do the trick: that's all that has been needed on the handful of hard-to-open liner locks I've gotten (including my RAT 1).
