I just received an Ontario Rat 1 and a caly 3 in the mail yesterday and I must say I am Overwhelmingly impressed with the Rat 1. Don't get me wrong, the caly 3 has become my favorite EDC of all time, but I already expected that. The RAT 1 on the other hand caught me completely by surprise. The ergonomics, the solid lock, and no blade play are just some of the things that I admire from this $27 knife. Yeah, It's AUS 8 steel, but I'll be using this for an "outdoor beater EDC". The Caly cost me $70 shipped (Great Deal), but in terms of value, I gotta give it up to the Rat 1!

I have the plain edge RAT-1 & have to agree that its a lot of Bang for the Buck. Hooks up nice, no blade play, takes & holds an edge well.

Welcome to the RAT 1 club. My favorite knife in the world. You can beat the crap out of it and it will smile right back. It will hold a great edge in the woods too; not super sharp, but sharp enough.

I have two. Both plain edge, one gloss and one black. Now I think I will need to grab a serrated model.

I love this knife. It is like a Buck 110 for the new age of knives.

Looks pretty decent. What's the blade length on that thing?

Blade length is 3.6 inches of AUS8 steel. The lock up is 100% perfect. It is a flow through design for easy cleaning. The pillar construction is overbuilt and tough -not too heavy at all. The liner lock is also very strong and thick. I want a crate full of these things to arm all my friends with. They are perfect knives -all things considered.

If they came in CPM-S30V steel I would easily pay double or even triple for one.

I totally agree! make this bad boy in a better steel and you easily have a spyderco military competitor!

I EDC a plain satin RAT 1, and it is very useful, very solid and has quite some potential.

I tend to carry a much smaller blade as well, though; although the shape is not agressive, people tend to get a little wide-eyed when I deploy a knife this big.

The RAT-1 is a great knife if you can overcome the fact that it is manufactured in Taiwan for a totally sleazy company.:barf:

Thanks for sharing.

Personally the 'look' of the knife doesnt do much for me but it seems like it would be a good user... nothing wrong with Aus8 at all either and for the price you aint gonna get no shmancy steel :D

Just lost mine! One of the best pocket knives I owned. Will be getting another.

And that is why it will never come close to a Military.

Let's see: Military $140
Rat-1 $25

Just how much Better of a knife is the military over the Rat-1 for $115 more? Probably not much if any.

Seriously I like spyderco but for the PRICE and what you get in the Rat-1 there is NO comparison.

I think people just have to try it out. I instantly fell in love with it

Rat 1 is alright.... But there are other knives, like the Spyderco Tenacious, which I prefer by far. Prices seem close enough also.

I wish Rat Cutlery would make another version with higher quality steel. I still love the Rat 1, but I would like one that holds an edge even longer. If I had that, that would be my permanent EDC.

At the time that knife came out Aus8 was the king of the hill for sub-300 dollar stainless knives. And for that price Aus8 is still a very high quality steel. I remember when you couldn't find a toothpick made from Aus8 for less than 50 dollars.

The value of this knife is mindblowing. I just used it to prune some invasive thorn bushes in my backyard. They never saw it coming...btw...the lockup on this knife is OUTSTANDING
