I bought this knife a couple of weeks ago after hearing all of the great reviews about how this was the ultimate budget knife. After taking it out of the box and fiddling with it a bit I was really impressed with the fit and finish. I then put it back in the box where it sat until two days ago when I took it back out to put it into my rotation of carry knives. After playing with it a bit more and inspecting it a little bit closer I noticed that the blade grind was very uneven. Now I don't know what to do, do I send it back or is this just normal for these knives? I haven't used it to do anything so the knife is still brand new, I was just wanting to get some opinions on this.1518576581586495901920.jpg 15185768446852118150835.jpg

Send it back if the vendor will take it back or...

Call Ontario or go to their site for their E-mail for warranty service. They will do you good.

I see this all the time on even surprisingly high end knives. Ultimately it should’t affect performance, especially if you will just sharpen it out anyway.

That said, it is you knife and only you can decide if it met your expectations or not. If it bothers you then send it back.

Yeah I got it from Blade HQ.....will probably arrange to send it back

One side is just more acute than the other.
I would not worry about that, we are knife nuts just sharpen it.
Eventually you'll have to any way. ;)

if it cuts use it. if it bothers you sharpen it evenly. lots of manufacturers have uneven blade grinds, some more than others at any price range. it sucks when a particular company charges $200+ and constantly does it though.

Like others have said, not that unusual. I have gotten worse grinds from far more expensive knives than the Rat. If it bothers you send it back, but I would just use it.

I’ve got more than a few 100+ knives that are like that at the tip.

How does it look other than that?

I just took a look at my rat1 in d2 user that I’ve had for awhile, and mine is much worse. I honestly can’t say if it came that way or if I was distracted when sharpening it—every time!

It is hard to tell from the photo what the grind looks like. If the tip is a bit off, it is not a concern to me and just blend it to the rest of the grind to even it out when I sharpen it. If the grind is super bad all the down the blade or an extremely uneven grind, then it needs to be sent back IMO.

Right before OKC started their INTENSIVE Quality Control I got two new SP-53s, both were BAD GRINDS. One the edge was curvy the other one so much was off near the last few inches oblong-ed grind I sent them back. It was between production runs of the SP-53, they took some time to get me ones that were done right but they were done right. They let me have a pick of the blade from their site for my troubles, but they wanted to make sure my knives were done right. OKC hand grinds their fixed blades so things were a little "Off" if I OCD about it with a magnifine glass with a very little slight off here or there but that didn't effect the knife. For the price and the quality they have been great heavy choppers! Love that 5160 steel for that!

Thanks all the replies....the blade grind was off the entire length of the blade (really hard to show in pictures). I bought it from Blade HQ a couple of weeks ago so I got in contact with them and they said to send it back (I just love that company ☺). Not turned off by this experience with OKC (shit happens) and will probably try another one soon.

Thank you everyone for your comments. Rockstarter, sorry to hear about the uneven grind, and I'm glad that Blade HQ took care of it for you. I'll have to ask around a bit to see if that's within normal tolerances. I'd have to admit that on the RAT folders, function and low price are more significant factors than appearance. That said, we still expect, and want you to expect, a well made knife.

I loved the knife outside of that one issue, definitely deserves its reputation as the ultimate budget knife. It was a livable issue for sure but it being my first Rat 1 I wasn't sure if that was normal or not. I will be purchasing another one soon.

I bought my first RAT 1 earlier this month, at my local Walmart.
I think it is a well made knife, and have no complaints whatever.
It was arm hair shaving sharp out of the hang pack, the blade is well centered, no blade play, and there were/are no sharp edges on the handle. I am also impressed with the clip.
I was concerned the clip would cause a hot spot. It doesn't. (Thank goodness, I don't have a Torx small enough to take the clip off. I also like the default point down carry.)
This is my first "Modern" knife.
It has not left my pocket since I got it ... except when using it, of course. :)
It makes a great co-carry with my Buck 110, a stockman, and 4 blade Scout Knife. :)
