I am just wanting to know which steel you prefer for the Rat 3. I know both steels are good but if had to chose just one: which one would it be? Thx

the Ontario RAT3 comes in D2 or 1095.
The RAT cutlery RC3 only comes in 1095.
2 different companies, 2 different (but VERY similar looking) knives.
easy to get confused, but be aware RAT cutlery does not offer a warranty on the Ontario RAT knives.
In answer to your question, if you want an Ontario RAT3, I'd go for the D2, but do it quick because I've heard they are out of production.
If you want an RC3, then 1095 is your only option, but don't worry, it'll perform just fine.

Get the RC-3. 1095 is fine steel, the design of the knife is great, and Rat Cutlery's warranty and CS are second to none.

1095 is a better choice in my opinion. High quality, takes an edge with minimal work, and can get SCARY sharp.

I've had one knife in D2 and swore I would never do it again. Didnt seem to hold an edge to much longer than 1095, but bou did it take forever to sharpen.

1095 has been great for me for my daily carry RC-3. I would, scratch that, I am buying another one for my survival knife due to the ease of sharpening.

Agreed it's a pita to sharpen. But that shows a great wear resistance.

But I prefer an ease to sharpen for my outdoor knives.

(Yes I have a RAT in D2, I want a RC-3 too ;) )

I'd get the RC3, which means 1095. If nothing else for the longer grip area.

Even before RC, my Ontario RATs were 1095. I prefer a tough, easy to sharpen steel, the only "super steel" I've ever really gone for is INFI, which is easy to sharpen in its own right. All my other blades are either 1095 or 5160 (well, some stainless like my SAKs, and Buck 110).
