I'm considering buying a Rat-4 but Im concerned with the Kydex sheath.
I have never owned a knife with a Kydex sheath. The knife will be used for everything from hunting and camping, feild dressing deer and so on.

If you own one of these knive tell me what you think of the sheath and any other advice you may have.

Thanks in advance.

I have an RC4. Excellent knife if you like a thicker blade. NO issues at all with the Kydex. Its my first Kydex sheath as well. I think I generally prefer leather, but Kydex is tough as nails, light and will last a lifetime. No rot issues, no problems with mold. But Kydex is not very traditional and has a definite "look".

I like mine.

My RC3 has a molded plastic sheath. I think I prefer the feel of Kydex.

Howdy,

Last year I bought an RC-4 and it was my first kydex sheath. I was just as apprehensive as you are about it. I have always used leather up to this point.

I have to admit I still love leather, but the Kydex sheath supplied with the RC-4 is great. I was suprised how much I liked it.

My prefered method of attaching it to a belt is to use paracord to make beltloops (instructions to do this are sent with the knife). It holds the sheath and knife tight against the body, completely out of the way. To me it's very comfortable and secure.

Try it, I think you will like it!

great sheath system. get the molle back, I prefer it as it drops the knife below my beltline.
Easy to get at and won't jab you in the side.

As far as production kydex sheaths go, it doesn't get much better than RAT Cutlery/ESEE knives' sheaths. My only firsthand point of comparison is the sheath for the Spyderco Street Beat, and the RC-4's sheath is easily better.

So as far as kydex goes, you could do a whole lot worse in terms of an introduction.

I don't think you'll have any complaints on the ESEE kydex sheath. I've owned both leather and kydex, and I'd take kydex over leather any day. You can take it through hell and back, wash it off, and it's good to go. All of my ESEE sheaths are a totally snug fit, with no rattle or movement. I think they make some of the best production ones around. If your still not sold, got to knivesshipfree and they sell leather ones for the ESEE blades.

The ESEE/RC4 kydex sheath is top notch. I would reccomend getting the MOLLE backing for it though. That way you can wear it like a traditional belt sheath.
