Hey guys, Im gonna order a RAT 5 and am weighing the pros and cons of getting it in D2 or 1095. I won't be chopping with it, I'm going to get a BK7 for that. I am unfamaliar with D2, but 1095 has not let me down yet, ahould I stick with what I am familiar with or pay the 15 bucks extra?

I really like the 1095 better. It is much easier to sharpen and holds and edge well. I personally think the RATs D2 needs to be a little harder to get the real performance out of D2 steel, however it is by no means bad. D2 is a little more rust resistant. It is your choice, but you cannot go wrong with a RAT knife.

I just got a RAT-7 D2 and it is not very sharp, but it has not gotten dull at all after I chopped up several items such as a broken DVD player & pressure treated 4x4 timber. The coating is not even wearing off.

It is an awesome all around blade for $94, w/ a sheath and black linen grips. I highly recommend this knife in either steel.

The Rat-5 is probably as big/long a knife I would get in D2. I have one in 1095 and love it but would probably buy another in D2, if they were available. I am considereing a RAT-7 and it will be 1095 since, for me, it will be more of a chop and smash balde for which I want tough over hard steel.

The RAT-5 is the cross over point - you can not go wrong with either steel in that size.
