Rat 7 absuse??

In D-2 or 1095? What constitutes in your mind as "serious abuse"? What other knives are you comparing it too if any at all? What all do you want to do with it?

I want to know if it should stand up to things that knives shouldnt be used for like batoning, being dropped, being thrown things like that. As for the steel the 1095 carbon. Also would the SOG field pup be a better alternative?

It'll baton, it won't break if you drop it... but don't, and why would you throw it... it's not designed for that. Use it like a knife and it'll last you for a long time.

Ok what do you think of the sog field pup?

Nice knife for the money. Very utilitarian-- like a mora in many respects. It's hollow ground, AUS-8 steel, molded handle and a WEIRD (but usable) sheath-- it is a combo of leather and kyvex. Normark can make you a sheath if you want all kyvex. I wish they made this knife with a flat-ground blade-- it would rock for wilderness use. If they would just ask me before putting these things to market.... :D

I used mine (D2) to split aspen logs for my camp fire - I used a baton. It worked great. Aspen is not a hard wood, but it typically has a twisted grain so splitting it with a knife can take some heavy hits with a baton.

It's a great knife. I would suggest using a diamond sharpener when it gets a little dull, it will speed up the sharpening process.

Throwing is the only thing out of those that I would consider abuse. Batoning can be abuse if taken to extremes, but I've been known to baton the knife blade in my Swiss Tool to make some relatively precise splits on smaller sections of branches. What I did to my old Buck 119 last weekend, on the other hand, I would say was pretty abusive. I broke the tip off of the blade few years go using it to pry on something that I shouldn't have been. I ground some semblance of new tip on in and since then I've used it s beater knife. Last weekend I used it to help take apart a couple of old pallets. I used it to pry at the boards and batoned it through a few nails with hammer. I also used it to dig some weeds out from between the bricks on the patio which brought it into lot of contact with the bricks as well as some buried rocks. I'm pretty sure that either of the knives you're looking t would be able to do any of this without major damage. Not that I would recommend doing any of this stuff with a knife. If I want to risk breaking my knife and/or injuring myself that's my business, I won't suggest that anyone else try it though.

Since I own both and have used both I would say the Rat-7 is more up your ally. Mine is in D-2 and I have used it heavily to baton, chop and pry for camping and for fun and it has held up well. I would recommend it over the Sog field pup as it is not in the same weight and size class imo being that the sog is 3 inches shorter and considerably lighter. You could do a tag team but then I would tell you to get the RTAK and the RAT7.

Does anyone hear know if the rat-7 can take serious abuse??

I called mine a no-good, lazy, ghey, useless girls blouse of a knife the other day. It's just sat there in it's sheath and didn't bat an eyelid,:) Thank you thank you - I'll be here all week folks........

No seriously - I've battoned and chopped with mine for a few years. I still use it to split kindling - it's still going strong. Slightly ironic that I don't tend to take a big knife bush with me nowadays but always find a use for it around the house and yard.
