Is the rat 7 really worth the xtra 40 bucks???? I have a bk9 right now aiming for a bk7......should i just suck up the cost and get a rat 7????

rtak 2 has more blade for less money is that right 3" of extra blade for less money?? is the rtak 2 less sturdy??? just a question

Rats always worth the money. Though I still think you're not getting much extra with the RAT, the Becker should suffice. Warranty is the only true advantage I see.

If I'm not mistaken, he's referring to the Ontario-made RAT-7, not any knife made by RAT Cutlery, now ESEE Knives. I don't think the Ontario knives have the same warranty as the ESEE knives do. Feel free to correct, if wrong.

If you like and are comfortable with the smooth scales on the BK9, stick with the BK7 - same grip.
If you want something with a bit more texture in the grip, the Ontario RAT7 is not a bad knife -- and the $40 price difference pretty much covers the cost of ordering a set of micarta scales for a BK.
Since you already have the BK9, you wouldn't be gaining much by moving up to the 10" Ontario RTAK-II.
just my .02

thanks guys but its just that i love blades and yeah so i want everything from anything. I'm actually prob just going to get a rtak2 because i already have a usmc ( kabar ). the 10" blade will be my machete!

I would get the BK7.

The Rat 7 is an ontario blade. Warranty is nowhere near the same as ESEE (Rat cutlery). Ontarios heat treat is known to be spotty. I've heard of way more ontario 1095 and D2 blades breaking in half than KA BAR's. KA BAR's Heat treat is right on. I dont care for ontario's business ethics either.. but I wont get into that.

I'm with Jake on this. Also, although the warranty isn't stated as explicitly as ESEE's, I can't remember an instance when there was a problem with a Becker that it wasn't taken care of right away.

I've not heard good things about Ontario recently.

Go for the BK-7.

You could order a BK7 + Micarta scales from the same place and it would be slightly cheaper than the RAT 7. I would go that way so that you could try out the Micarta, then if you really liked it you could order new scales for your BK-9.

+1 on that. Right now, over in the Becker forum there's a guy who had a bit of his edge chipped off and He's already received a response from KABAR asking him to send it back and they'll send him a new one.

I hate to say it but i just got an Ontario RAT 7 ,1095 i believe, rockwell tested and it came in at 45 rc. That's right not even 55.rc. It was a shame because i liked the designe. Oh and yes the rockwell machine is a calibrated professional unit at a heat treaters.

Actually, in that same thread, I think there's two, maybe three, people that Kabar has asked to have their knives sent back for repair/replacement.

Bottom line: Kabar and Becker will take care of you. Ontario???
