So I got a Ontario Rat-7, love the knife....sheath makes me want to kill myself.

The "cordura" sheath is very glossy and thin(NOT cordura) the "kydex" insert is clear, thin, and brittle(NOT kydex) and the accessory pocket is secured with a plastic buckle which is nice, but not what is shown in vendors pictures(they show velcro closure)

I've E-mailed the vendor from whom i purchased this knife asking them to clear up whats what and possibly exchange this sheath or buy a new one.

While I await their reply I thought id ask you guys if you knew any decent sheaths that fit this knife? i prefer cloth as I like to keep a eze lap stone close, but kydex is good as well(ones with belt loops preferably)

Blackhawk makes some excellent ballistic nylon sheaths in different sizes, as do Spec-ops, Ranger knives and TOPS. I believe they all have velcro utility pouches.

regards,
Steve

For about 30 bucks,I got the Spec-Ops. One thing, how wide is the blade? It will take up to an 1 7/8 in blade. My BK9 is 1 7/8 in wide but 2in at the thumb rest. I have the 6in . The are very nice sheaths.

I have a blackhawk sheath for my Camillus USMC - it has the kydex insert - was like $25. My Rangers/RTAK II have the same sheath that you have - I don't hate it, it works. The clear plastic liner slips out sometimes w/ my Ranger, which does suck. Talk to Leatherface and have him make you a custom sheath - won't cost much more than getting a production sheath.

My RAT-7 D2 came with a decent Spec Ops sheath, but maybe this is only for the D2 steel, as this option costs about $15 more. Worth the extra $'s for the Spec Ops sheath alone!

You can also cheat and goto the Busse website and click the link for "Sheat Options". There are alot of awesome custom sheath makers there in one spot.

Good Luck!

Thanks guys, I'll probably go with the specops(hopefully knifecenter can get me the specops sheath specifically for the rat7) I'm still confused as to which sheath is supposed to be provided with this knife...i think i might have gotten a old school one, or perhaps they "upgraded" to this junky one....iunno really.

This sheath would be decent if the liner were kydex, this clear one is so brittle all the corners are already shattered and ive yet to put it on my belt.

Hey Guys..

Heres the sheath I make for the Rat 7

The Spec Ops is nice and all but that On/Scene sheath is ideal. :)

Buy good stuff to begin with and have one less worry.

yea those r nice, but like i said i prefer to have a pocket on my sheath...i ordered the specops combat master from actiongear, having it overnighted so hopefully i get it before i leave for this weekends adventure. :)

Of all my survival bushcraft knives this sheath sucks the hardest. Good knife..LOUSY sheath. Even the becker nylon sheaths are considerably better. The becker sheaths even have a utility pouch built in to sort of make up for the fact they arent kydex but this sheath has nothing but ugly looks

I can see by your username that you like very old things :)

And welcome to Bladeforums

the knife connection sells a kydex sheath for the esee 6 that also fits the Rat 7. Its what I use.
