I like Buck knives, but I'd get the RAT-7 (non-serrated) in D2. It's a better shaped, tougher knife for wilderness survival. The Buck Nighthawk looks and feels more like a killing tool than a utilitarian field knife.
check out www.knifetests.com. A fellow board member has a website where he puts different knives through all kins of abuse, and he recently posted videos of the buck nighthawk.
As a general purpose camp/survival type knife I don't think you can go wrong with the RAT knives because this is what they have been designed for,however for the uses you describe I would be tempted to look at the RAT 5 or the TAK,the RAT7 is a little large for food prep and finer tasks.
If however the issue of rust enters into your equation then the nighthawk would place higher on the list and is still one hell of a tough knife !
