RAT-7 vs. RD6 vs. RD7?

I know this is kind of a redundant thread, but thought I'd ask anyway.

I'm considering the aforementioned knives, and am trying to reach that final conclusion. First off, the Ontario vs. the Ranger? BTW, I'm looking at the 1095 version of the RAT-7, rather than the D2.

And in terms of the RD6 and RD7, does that 1.5" of difference in the blades lend the two to different tasks a little better or is the length more for the sake of preference?

I'll be using it while in Iraqistan and it just needs to be an all around hard working fixed blade...I won't necessarily be doing a lot of chopping with it, so that's not a huge priority. I'm just thinking that the RD7 could be a little longer than I need. Thoughts?

RD6 is fine IMHO.

But bear in mind this is not lightweight knife (it's 0.25" thick blade ).
Ranger RD6 incl. sheath = 615g
Ranger RD6 itself = 459g

I think the RD6 would serve you well. It will chop if you need it, but it is really a heavy duty cutting implement. To use your words, it is an all around hard working fixed blade. Worthy of your upcoming trip to the sand box. This is the older style pictured.

Just to throw in another perspective: I don't own the other knives, and I'm sure they are fine tools. I do, however, have a RAT-7 D2 that is a phenomenal knife. I've reprofiled the blade and rounded the thumb serrations a bit, sharpened it on the 40 degree bevel on my Sharpmaker, and it works great for chopping wood, opening packages, fixing food in the kitchen, shaving hair off of my arm, whatever. Just my experience.

God bless you as you are away from home, serving our country.
