Today I took a vacation day and took my bow and my rat for a walk in the woods. I got a deer. It is two firsts for me: my first archery deer and my first buck. The Howling Rat did a good job dressing the deer out. It had 4 points on the left side and 2 on the right side. The main part of the anterler was broken off the right side.

If someone can tell me how, I will post picts. Guess you cant just copy and paste??

Congrats on your deer!

Thanks RF. I'll try that later. Now I gotta drop the anterlers off and get them mounted on a plaque.

Fantastic!! I can't wait to see the pics.

Sounds like you had a great time!

I was just checking out the knife after yesterdays use. I hammered that knife through the pelvis bone and tried to break it. I pryed and twisted and it did not just break. I had to hammer through 3 times (in line with each other) to get it open. I had the tip in the bone and was twisting it too. The edge up at the tip still looks great and is sharp pretty sharp. It did loose some sharpness but not much. I really like the blade steel in this thing!!!!

I'll just sit here and wait for you to post your pics

OK here are some picts of the deer. This guy definetly had his mind on "other things" when he walked by. I have heard the bucks are "distracted" during mating season. He walked up behind me and looked right at me from 5 yds. I could not shoot because of branches and brush in the way. He walked around a few minutes and then walked in front of me at a range of 5 yards. He looked right at me when I drew the bow but kept walking past me. When he cleared the brush I let the arrow fly. That's when he realized he was in trouble!!

The butcher shop said the meat will be ready for pickup on Friday. I can hardly wait. I love red meat with flames under it!!!:)

Excellent pics!! Thanks for posting them :D

The deer weighed about 100 to 110 after field dressing. Not a real big deer. But they don't get real big around here. I guess the weather is on the mild side so they do not bulk up much. He was about average for the 5 deer I have gotten. I shot a doe a few years ago that was bigger. Last years' doe was about the same size. I shot two doe that were smaller. Guess I am not too picky. Young ones are more tender!!!!

Today I picked the meat up from the butcher shop. I got 12 pounds of bologna, 30 pounds of peper sticks, and about 15 pounds of tenderloin and round steaks. I'll do the math: about 57 pounds of meat. Yummy!!! Time to get the bottle filled for the grill!!!

I am glad you killed him. He has some mutant rack, doesn't he? Many people like the non-typical racks, but I like the nice and balanced ones.

Would you mind sharing what state you are in. We have more than enough deer, but the average bucks are not much bigger than that since we have far too many does.

I wish you the best hunting. Perhaps one day it will cool off enough here and the time will open up for me to go myself.

Thanks for the pics. I haven't taken a buck since I was a kid but those shots take me back. I should get back in it since the deer population in SC is very high. They are damn near a niusance in some counties. I've used my HR for some domestic butchery and it really does the job.

Nice Pics!
I am not going hunting, but alot of places around here are allowing up to 5 deer. They are everywhere. I could kill 3 while just sitting on my roof.

Terry,
I live in south central PA. We have a lot of deer around here. And most of them are doe. It is pretty built up and many places can only be safely hunted with a bow. (I guess that is not an accurate statement. These areas can be safely hunted with a rifle by someone who is careful and patient. Farmers are more willing to let archers on their land than rifle hunters though.) I got him on a dairy farm in the area.

I too like a balanced looking typical set of antlers. His antlers are mostly typical. He broke the main beam off on the right side, leaving only 2 points on that side, with 4 on the other. The right side looks real nice for the size of his body. If I had let him go he would have been real nice in a couple of years. (Or maybe somebody else would have gotten him before then.) I do not get to do much scouting before I hunt. I have had several people tell me there are some monsters on that farm. I think his antlers, for his small body size, indicate there are some good genes on that farm!! I will have to scout more to find those monsters. But, mainly I am after meat.

Deer is deffinately very tastey meat. Out of all the game i have ate, (rabbit, turkey, pheasant, dove, deer) nothing beats deer stew. Although turkey shishcabobs wrapped in honey bacon are awesome too
