I want to purchase a larger Rat Cutlery knife. I own a RC-3. Great all purpose knife. I'm looking to purchase the RC-5. I wonder if this blade is to heavy for backpacking. The RC-6 is 4oz lighter but has a longer blade. Can some help me out. Thank You

The ESEE 6 is a better knife for camping, as the ESEE 5 is a bit thick for camp chores.

This is a very common question. The 5 is a thick knife, there is no doubt about that. The 6 is thinner, with the longer blade. I have a 6 in a RAT Pack Kit and really like it and the thinner blade is lighter and better for finer type work. Just decide what you'll use it for and go with it.

If you decide on the RC 5, email me before you buy.;)

I think this boils down to your backpacking style. I know plenty of folks on here are more into the survival stuff, ie. covering all your bases of possible situations. I myself am more of a lightweight backpacker, therefore I would not carry the RC5 backpacking considering how much it weighs. I would probably just take my izula since it is so light. Now, for dayhikes, I do take my rc5 just cause it is fun to carry around when weight isnt an issue. I know that when my back and hips are sore from a weekend backpacking the last thing I need is a 1 lb knife. If I had to choose between the 2, I would go with the lighter one.

My suggestion is buy both and try em out, see what works best for you. Besides why not have both, right.

RC6 all the way for your purposes.

RC5 is too heavy and thick IMHO for a good backpacking or camp knife - dont forget, it was DESIGNED to be a downed pilots survival knife...
