Hey guys. Ive been thinking for a while now about getting a good camping knife for splitting wood, chopping branches, cutting meat etc etc. How tough is this knife? Has anyone ever broken one? How does it fare when splitting tough/thick logs? Is it thicker than the RC4? Would the thickness of the RC6 be enough or would you rather go for a "sharpened prybar" like the BK2 or RC5?

Stories, pics, recommendations are all welcome

From the RAT site it's lighter and thinner then the RC5, exactly why I'm going for it instead of the RC5. But if you want a "sharp pry bar" then you should go after the RC4.

I believe the RC6 is the same thickness as the RC4. I have an RC4 and have put it through hell splitting some tough logs without a problem. I've never heard of anybody breaking an RC6, and even if you do, RAT will replace it for free.

I've heard nothing but excellent things about the RC6 so get it!

RC4 and RC6 are the same thickness. Blade on the RC6 is 1 1/2 inches wide as opposed to 1 1/4 inch wide on the RC4.

As to strength the RC6 has taken everything that many of us have thrown at it including batonning it through some gnarly knotty old logs.

As to breakage I did read one thread posted by Jeff where someone had managed to break the tip off one prying bricks apart or some such moronic action. Anything can be broken especialy when confronted by human stupidity. However RAT Cutlery's warranty covers you in such circumstances, and they DO honor their warranty. Some of the best service in the business, bar none.

I wouldn't consider the RC6 a chopper (nor any other knife in that size range) but the use of a baton is safer, more exact, and more efficient anyway.

I have and have extensively used all three RC4, RC5, and RC6. The RC6 is a great knife that will serve your outdoor needs exceptionaly well. A very good value for the money.

Only one RC-6 has ever been returned for replacement, and that's 'cause the idiot used the very tip of it to pry bricks out of his driveway. I've had mine about a year now and I've put it through hell. I haven't even had to resharpen it yet.

Sounds like a really nice blade. I like the extra length it has as apposed to the RC5 and the BK2.

The RC-6 is a great knife. I don't think you have to worry about breaking it. Plus you'll find a lot more uses for it than you will the RC-5. The RC-5 is a mean batoner but it's bulkiness limits its usefulness in most situations.

I just got my RC6 in the mail today. Havn't had a chance to use it for anything major yet but based on on others opinions and what I can see it should be able to perform all the things you are looking for in a knife. I think it would be a good camp knife.

I've got an RC-6 and from everything I've heard, seen and read, it'll take a beating and ask for more. As far as being a prybar though, unless you're in a life threatening situation and it's all you've got, I'd just buy a dedicated pry bar. It's a lot cheaper and better suited to the task of prying. Try the CountyComm Breacher bar. I've got one of those too and it'll surely get the job done.
