Got my RAT Fire kit for my birthday yesterday and it's definitely not the same as my LMF. The molton fire balls are impressive! I used my Izula as a striker with impressive results.
I took one of my john waynes (p-38) and ground a chisel grind (1/2 inch )along the side where US is printed. It makes an impressive striker and still will open a can.
just thought I'd share.

Awl on swiss army ,back of saw on swiss army knife, buck hartsook, going gear sales a cool little firesteel striker that works great....
Knife edge if needed,

Your right, the RAT Fire Kit is one hell of a fire starter. Everything else I've tried fails in comparison. Those blobs really seem to ignite the starting material.

That’s a pretty good idea, especially if you’re going to have the P38 with you anyway. Any item that can serve more than one role is a plus IMO.

I doubt it, but can the P38 fit inside the body of the Fire Kit? Would be nifty if it could.

I just tried it with the new shelby P-38, it will fit inside if you take the compass out, but it won't screw shut, so it won't do you any good. Would have been GREAT if it did fit and work.

After working more with the p-38 striker I went back to using the knife edge- much better spark producer.
Anyone know where one can find the replaceable ferro rods for the rat kit?

I bet a P-38 will fit inside a Hest's handles. You know you need both a Hest and a fire kit when you go into the woods.

I test /practice/"play" with my gear quite a bit. Teaching and showing my boys and friends how to use and stay in practice is a huge "use" multiplier. Starting a fire on each excursion adds up. We went through a LMF scout in around 6 months.
Where can I find a replacement rod?

I just got some misch rods from Going Gear and they seem to work well. What I’ve found is that I have to actually have to strike it as though I’m trying to slice a piece of it off (edge pointing toward the tinder) for it to work well. Not sure if this is so with other misch rods as most show the knife more perpendicular to the steel in a scraping manner.
