I kinda like fire. just ordered a bunch of various fire steel tools.

In the Plano box-

2 lengths of jute twine
1 sos pad
6 alcohol pads
8 cotton make-up removal pads soaked in vasoline
1 magnesium bar
1 firesteel.com tube and striker

also shown-
firesteel.com bunker

Rat fire kit, stuffed with vasoline soaked cotton for fuel.
Black Izula, that if you look closely, you can see I wrapped a very small steel into it. fits perfectly.

Lots to play with there. Let us know which tools you prefer.

Got to play with them last weekend.

The Bunker is just stupid huge. It'll be reserved for looking cool in front of girls making a fire at the beach.

The Rat kit, and the firesteel.com mini i wove into the izula are intended as emergency use only tools. The rat fire is in my day pack right now. It's perfect for this.

For regular use, the firesteel ranger and the plano kit are what I'm likely to use. It's large enough to get good spark off of, and small enough not to be silly.

The strikers I have toss -ok- sparks. Like the RAT website says, you really get the best sparks and balls of metal with a sharp edge. I've got an old gerber ez-out i'm using as a striker for regular use, and in an emergency, i'd use whatever I had on me.

Thanks on the wrap....and don't worry, I used the fireplace.

I been looking for some fire steels and other methods of fire production, heres something i whipped up for they hest kit... i figure you could use it with that spare rod ya got..

somberbear- very nice wrap around job. good way to make a zipper pull or something even more useful. gonna have to try that with some of my other steels.

clown- thats a pretty cool kit. When I was in scouts we had something like it, a leather fold-over pouch we made, then a chunk of flint, and a broken piece of a file. Toss in some twine, charcloth and the like, and it was a useful kit. I can't find it for the life of me. may have to replace it with this for now.

Also looking to get out and make a good bow and drill.

diz- how do you like the firesteel? i almost bought one but instead went with the rat one.

the firesteel tubes are nice. Like i said the bunker is just too huge, the ranger I think is perfect, and the Armageddon should be nice as well, but a little too big for me.

Compared to the RAT, well they all throw balls of fire. the rat steel is shorter, but has the advantage that it's replaceable with a screw inside. all the firesteel ones are glued in. I'm actually considering getting a second RAT one and putting a longer steel on it. I'd have to drill it, but I think there may be a drill press around here somewhere.

I just bought a striker from goinggear (yes, he finally got them!), and they perform great on the goinggear firesteels.

And on changing that RAT steel for a longer one. Does trying to superglue a nut to the steel sound stupid?

you know, that may work. I haven't taken mine apart yet, so i'm not sure what it looks like inside there. I still like the short one for my day kit, going to wait for a second one to really play around with it.

Been looking at some of the goinggear steels. Gotta say, I was tempted on the 1/2" by foot long steel. Hehe. Might grab one of their handled versions and pick up a striker or two...they look comfy, but harder to just slip into some gear.

It never fails to amaze me how most of us that are into survival skills ahve a bit of an obsession with having more than one way to start a fire. I generaly carry at least three means of accomplishing that one task.

I just ordred the striker & several misc blank rods in 1/4"& 5/16" & 3/8" in 4" & 6" lengths ....
thanks for making me spend my money on things I have plenty of :D

and while most of you guys where not at the RAT Fest here in TX ,I scored a KSF Firekit in a Yellow otterbox ,Thanks Rich !!
