Here is a limb off a tree, just cutting into it, did well, took a big chunk out of it in one slice, impressive for a small blade.

Cut a notch, like you would in a fire board. Did well, no saw needed.

Some more whittling.

Thing is still shaving sharp, thats D2 for you :D There are a few scuffs on the coating, the wood seems to 'stick' to it, it happed to all my Rats. Charicter I guess. It was very comfortable in hand, no hot spots, and no slipping. The thumb ramp makes it very easy to choke up on and do fine work. Over all I would have to give this knife two thumbs up!

I like the RAT 3, feels like a fixed bladed pocketknife. I'm a sucker for a wide, flat blade too :D Nice pics.

I cant use the 1095 because its a gift, I know what your thinking....:jerkit: sorry, I would love to do a side by side compairson, I might have to buy another in 1095 and do that this summer.

I have other Rats in 1095 and D2 and as far as I can tell the D2 holds a edge noticealby longer. Thats about it. Neither have more of an advanted than the other as far as Im concerned, D2 holds a edge longer and is harder to resharpen, 1095 loses its edge and is easier to resharpen. Six to one, half a dozen to the other.

Damn this forum!!! I couldn't take it anymore, I've been reading all of these RAT-3 threads lately and couldn't help myself. I just ordered my first RAT-3 in 1095. I'm so weak!!! I'll just blame you guys when my wife wants to know why I needed this one.:D

I removed my blade coating and I think it has improved its cutting ability. My next step is a new sheath. I like the factory one alot don't get me wrong but want something a little more low profile for iwb carry. The factory one is great on my field gear. Also this way I don't have to keep putting it on and taking it off. I love that little guy so much I bought the model 1 folder.... now only if that were made in the USA... still a great knife though.

Aircraft stripper that I bought at homedepot. Just followed the directions on the can. Finished up different grits of wet dry sandpaper, the stripper did most of the work. I have a picture of it in a edc post some where on this sight I think it came out great.

I just read this thread, I am glad I own the RAT knives, yes knives, RAT3 D2 &1095 ,TAK D2,RAT-7 1095 , I am a big fan of these knives.. I find my self carrying the RAT-7 & RAT-3 more than any other knife outdoors, going backpacking thru Colorado this weekend and taken the pair with me..

What are your thoughts on the RAT3 in D2 vs. 1095? I would think getting sparks from a firesteel would be easier with the 1095. What other differences have you noticed.

I'm waiting for delivery of a RAT3 in 1095. If I like it I might have to get the RAT7 too (or another RAT3:D ). I'm also waiting for a Ranger RD6, so my choice will be whether I want an RD7 next or the RAT7.

To me & my opinion , you will love the 1095, I have yet to try the differences on the fire steel yet? they both are razor sharp and the 1095 is easier to resharpen but you will be amazed at that lil' knife and all the possibilities , the Rat-7 ,I would get one;I use the pair together and so far no camp chore, i was not able to overcome with the dynamic duo RAT-3/7 !I will test out the firesteel method over the weekend ,going camping in Colorado and I will be packing the pair:D !

Nice review! It seems like quite the little work horse! I've got a custom coming my way that will perform like that. Heck, I might need a RAT-3 also:D .

Thanks for the reply. I normally carry a midsized knife 6-7" and a good folder (usually a Strider SnG) for smaller tasks. But I'm contemplating replacing the folder with a small FB, which is why I ordered the RAT3. If it carries well, all things considered, I'd rather have a fixed blade than a folder as my second knife.
