RAT in the Rain--an RC6

I've got an RC6 and use it for camping. Hasn't rained on me...yet.

As you know it's 1095 so, what is recommended to preserve the steel if I use it in the wet camp environment?

Just wipe it down after using and a light coat of oil on the exposed edge/logo area and you will be good to go. Or don't worry about it til you get home, chances are if you are using it a good deal the edge won't rust up too badly

Don't worry too much, just use it, at the end of the day, wipe it off and put a little oil and that's it.

Just slip an non-lubricated condom over it, making sure the reservoir tip covers the point.

Be sure not to rub the condom back and forth vigorously on a RC-6 or the latex might burst and the exposed 1095 will turn bright orange and fall away like dust, creating an EPA Superfund site at your camp and some state or federal environmental liability for you.

Frankly I am amazed that entire generations of RAT designed knives have come back intact from the RAIN forest.;)

Boats, the condom comment was unexpected and funny. Thanks for the laugh! :)

Thanks for the tips about the oil on the blade--anything specific? Perhaps my question should are there different oils/brands of oil, for different blade steels?

Don't do anything except cut stuff - the coating will take care of you on the blade, cutting stuff will prevent rust.

if i were you i wouldnt even worry about rust it comes right off with use. i dont even oil my old ontario RAT-3 and it still performs solid and doesnt evne have a coating.

Use any oil, gun oil is great, but if you want an edible oil use Canola oil for example, mostly I learned to use any oil I can get my hands on when I need it, baby oil, gun oil, olive oil (messy though), Motor Oil (very bad idea :)) and any cooking oil.

But don't worry about rust as long as you use it, on the other hand if you stock it use a good non drying oil and convert your blade with it.

I use silicone. It gives your blade a nice slick coating that's not oily. My last trip rained the first 3 days (out of 5) and there wasn't a spec of rust. I've never had any problems with rust.

1095 and O1 are used alot in the UK - uncoated too, never seen any issues aslong as you keep it clean with a rag, now granted we dont have the wilds you guys get to experience so we're often not out for such extended trips but we certainly get the rain :)

I live in south georgia, 100% humidity and summer rain showers are common, and my izula has never had a speck of rust. Just keep it clean and keep using it

Mineral oil (find it in the laxative aisle), it doesn't spoil (like food oils do) and is tasteless and safe to eat (if you use your knife for food.)

You'd think good old motor oil is related to cyanide!

#1 on food grade mineral oil. I wipe them down after use, no issues at all. I am actually on Frye Island in ME right now, and my RC4 is getting plenty of use in the kitchen and outdoors. Still ticking just fine!

LOL! I've even been known to use USED motor oil (10W30 mostly) on some of my machetes that'll be spending time in wet environments and I've never had a problem.

Sure, there's that twitch I get from time to time after prepping food but that's no biggie...:D

Seriously, the easiest answer to the rust question is to carry a silicone "rod & reel" cloth you can buy for $3 at Wally world. If it's too big, just cut it into a smaller strip.

I wouldn't even bother wiping the blade during the day, just at night before you hit the rack.
