I just ordered my RC 3 mil and have a couple of questions for anyone that can give me some answers:

I want to know if any of you RC 3 owners have used the RC 3 as a field dressing knife for Whitetail Deer? If so how would you rate it or should I have ordered the 4?
Also I was looking at the leather sheaths for the RC 3 or 4 does anyone has any feedback on these sheaths-are they good or bad??

No feedback on the leather sheath, but I have used the RC3 and RC4 to dress deer and both work fine.

A lot of people go too big for a deer knife, IMO. There is nothing on a deer that a competent person should not be able to handle with a RC3, sans sawing the antlers off. Need a saw for that.;)

The RC-3 is perfect for deer. If you go bigger then it will be more difficult to cut through.

Also, forget about the leather sheath. Leather can rip over time and is extremely vulnerable to moisture. Just get a hard use kydex sheath.

Great thanks a million, now I know I made the right choice. I will also be using the RC 3 Mil as my primary Hiking/camping knife-looks like it will fit nicely on my pack straps.

Used my RC-3 to field dress 4 deer this season. Let me just say that it has replaced the Gerber that I used for the 10 previous seasons. Does that tell you anything? I do use another knife when I do the skinning and dissecting because you constantly run into bone and I do not want to have to retouch the edge after each session.

As far as the RC-4 goes, I am sure that it would do the job just as well but I prefer the smaller blade for whitetail. When the Micarta slabs come out for the Izula, it may replace the RC-3. Next season will tell.

Earlier in the season my cousin used a RC5 from field dressing to deboning. He said it was a "bit thick" but did the job without any issues. Its more about the hunter than the knife...

Great feedback guys, one last thing, I wanted to add a fob to the handle maybe some 550 cord, does anyone have any pics of different styles that they are currently using in the lanyard loop?

You are not very familiar with the KSF sheaths, are you?

Used my Rc-3 this season for deer as well. From field dressing to skinning to cutting the meat up for the freezer. Very pleased.

Well to each his own, and yes, if you don't take care of a leather "anything" it will get damaged. But I prefer leather to kydex for almost every sheath application.

for a feild dressing knife .... i perfer kydex... less gunk up and easy to clean out

the KSF sharp shooters are pretty good i have one for my ratpack knife... and when i wanna get dressy i wear it. its top notch up there with the rest of the barkie sheaths...

the 3 does great , for its size... even an izula would probably do it pretty well. but our deer are kinda on the small size.

I have the RC3 Knives Ship Free leather sheath. I love it, it works great and I never worry about retention. Also I have not had any issues with the leather in rain or snow type weather, although I have not had is submurged or anything. This sheath is very comfortable to wear is light weight and very easy to access even with wearing a coat. I cannot recommend it enough. Plus it has a firesteel loop if you're into that sort of thing. KSF also has a couple of leather pouch sheaths that are supposed to fit some RAT knives but I do not have any experience with them.

Also the people at KSF are great do work with and fourm members here.

Who is the guy that makes the Randall style leather sheaths for RATs. Dang it, I should have bookmarked it! He posted here showing pics of his sheaths a while back. Was leatherman his name?

I used my RAT pack knife this year to dress a doe. It performed just like I thought it would: excellent.

I also decapitated it using the RC-3 and did well. I did use a hack saw on the last bit because I was impatient.

Rc 3 I don't know, but the Rc4 works well. Leather I prefer custommade bij Martinsheaths, the netherlands.

I prefer the rc3 over the rc4 for cleaning deer because its a lil smaller. The rc4 does a good job also but I prefer the smaller rc3. This year i've cleaned two does and a 6 point with my rc3. HEST also works well caping and cleaning deer.
