Rat RC-5 or Falkniven A1

I do a bit of high alpine and high desert camping and backpacking and I am looking for a medium sized fixed blade knife to cover a broad range of tasks from light chopping to slicing and in case of an emergency robustness for random abusive tasks!
so with that in mind I have come down to either Rat RC-5 or Falkniven A1, they both have .25 inch stock, the Falkniven though is stainless (a plus) and laminated for strength while the Rat is 1095 (strong) but can be prone to rust, I have an izulu and like it a lot and I have a lot of respect for the company, I know that the RC-5 is new and not a lot of people have experience with it but any thoughts appreciated!! as well other suggestions. I am also looking for a Busse BATACLE (similar form factor) but they are hard to find!

Why not an S1 which is more spec wise similar to the RC-5? The A1 is somewhat of a big knife.

I would also suggest John Landi's knives. Landi's MPM out of 154CM might be another good choice for you...

Also... Matt Caldwell's knives over at vintageknives.com

Both makers are regulars here.

With both... you get the experience of owning something a bit more unique for the same money (or less) rather than a full production run off.

I would also highly recommend John Landi's knives. Excellent products from an excellent man.

That being said, both RAT and Falkniven have great reputations. RAT would win in the warranty department, but the Falkniven is quite stainless.

If you're looking for something totally rust proof and still quite tough, try something in H1 (Spyderco Rock Salt/Aqua Salt).

It depends on where you live. Fällkniven is quite pricey in the States, the price of RC-5 is well over 100 Euros (130 bucks) in Europe, so that could be a decisive factor. Personally, I prefer Fällkniven, although A1 comes only in a somewhat crappy plastic sheath.

I really like my A1 (and other Fallkniven's) and have no problem giving it a high recommendation.

I have no experience with the RC-5 so can't comment.

+1 on that. I'm very happy with my Fallkniven's.

I think this is one of those "you can't go wrong" situations. Both companies make great products.

Can't say which one you should choose but I have also had great experience with Fallknivens. Never handled an RC-5

Thanks everyone for their input, eventually i may buy all of them, That Landi sure is beautiful!!!! I considered the S-1 as well but was concerned that it was a good bit lighter then the RAT (16 oz) and the A-1 (around 12 oz) and would not be as good for chopping. the real question is even if i buy all of them, which one comes up with me to the mountains!!

RC5 for sure. Dont worry too much about rust. Just take care of it. Since you want to backpack, you might want to look at the lighter RC-6

The Fallkniven with its convex edge is as thick as the RAT but should cut better. If you don't absolutely want a super thick blade, I'd recommend the RC6 over the RC5, which is more for catastrophic conditions. All the RATs can handle ordinary emergencies. :)
