Hello everyone, this is my firs post here...
I am a Portuguese knife enthusiast, currently i own a sog seal pup elite, a sog mini pentagon, a sog aegis digi tanto, a sog powerassist (yep i like sog) and a cold steel double agent I... but i am in the market for a bigger knife, and i'm really having a hard time choosing between the rc-6 and the recon scout, i have leaned back and forth from one to the other for quite some time now... the thing that mainly makes me lean towards the recon scout is the extra inch it has on the rc-6 (7.5 vs 6.5), but is that extra inch really all that important??
I want the knife for fighting/tactical/survival purposes.

Any opinion will be greatly appretiated.
Thanks. :D

You get in a lot of knife fights eh? :p

I would get the RC-6 if it were me, nothing wrong with the Recon Scout either though, just personal preference.

RC-6. The recon scout is ridiculously thick at 5/16". Good luck getting that thing to slice. Handle material - mircata on the RC-6 versus kraton on the scout. While kraton isn't likely to break, it is not a particularly great handle blade. Several people have complained of the hotspots produced by these types of handles during prolonged use. The RC-6's mircata is very grippy and because the fibres swell on wetting, it actually gets grippier when it is wet.

Warranty on the RC-6 is "you break it, we replace it" - you just have to fill out the replacement form available on the ratcutlery subforum, indicate how it broke and return the broken blade. Warranty on the cold steel is "good luck with customer service".

Tactical applications - Jeff Randal and Mike Perrin who own RC also started and run the Randall's Adventure Training Survival School. Jeff routine writes in tactical magazines and advises on survival training to LEO's and military. Lynn Thomson - well I'm not going to open that can of worms, but lets just say his reputation as a leader in the area of military applications or survival is not well respected.

Then again, I'm an RC-fan. I invite you to come on down to the RatCutlery subforum and ask the ratpacker's and Jeff and Mike questions about their products and uses. They maintain a site here on blade forums. Or you can go over to cold steel's website where they have their own forum. I doubt you'll get Mr. Thomson actually responding to a question you pose. You probably will get Jeff Randall or Mike Perrin responding to you on their site. That is just the kind of owners that they are.

They are different beasts. The RS is a modified bowie-type survival knife, a very good chopper for its length. Its thickness works for it in this respect. It's not too long to make woodcraft impossible, but the RC6 will do better, and its thinner, which is another advantage there. So define your requirements first.
RAT's warranty is superior, no argument. I own an RS that's been abused like hell, and it's completely functional, so the warranty point is - for me at least - moot.

I think in the end most knife nuts will own knives in both categories. An inch and a half is a substantial difference, especially as the RS is thicker too, and thus a lot heavier. Depending on your purpose, this is a plus or a drawback. Decide what you're gonna use it for, and you will have made the choice of knife too.
