So ive been looking over my New Ratwieler and am finding its not that sharp
Dont know why ,But im not Complaining as im happy to have it .
im looking to get it Back to what i believe is Rat Sharp without Changing the Edge .im looking to send it off to get it done as im sure as hell i would F##k it up even with all the Advice people could offer . so any good people you guys could recommend would be nice

I think Bill Siegle would be a good dude to start with; He's on the forums here somewhere. I gotta tell you my technique, though. I use DMT Diafold sharpeners, coarse through extra fine (blue through green). I place the blade edge up on my knee and draw the Dialfold down the edge a little bit at a time and not using too much pressure. Just let the sharpener follow the edge bevel and it will do it's job quickly. I find I can maintain a consistent angle very well with this technique. You will like the results and you can touch up the edge in seconds while in the field.

If you're willing to send it out, why not send it home? They could put the edge back.
Closer to you (if you can pursuade him) is Tom Mayo...:D , not sure he'd do it, but boy would he know how!
There are a few knife nuts in Hawaii, maybe one of them could help. Start by asking Klesk how he sharpens his...???

If the edge is damaged, or you want it reprofiled, then sending it out might be a good idea. Everyone who owns and operates a knife should learn how to maintain an edge.

maybe your right but i dont want to mess up my New Knife ,I dont know how to fix my LCD TV if it ever broke but i still use it .
Thx for the Reply s guys will send a few emails out

I agree with Bobby B. In any case, if the Hawaii options don't work, the guys at the Wauseon plant who made the knife will surely be able to sharpen it for you.

fishbudda, where are you at? You might be able to hook up with Kalimalena who's on Keneohe. He's a total Rat thru and thru. He can put a mad crazy edge on a ball peen hammer.

Regardless, you should know that Busse's and Swamp Rats come from the shop inconsistent on sharpness. I don't know why, but in their defense I have to assume that it's not their top level priority or something. I get one blunt one after another, and then one will show up that's like a razor. My axe showed up ready to shave with for some reason, but my howling rat was blunt. That's just the way they are. They might just figure we'll get them how we want them so they don't fuss. Some folks like 20 degree edges, while others have their own preferences. It's like where you like your seat to be in your new car, ya know?

I can tell you that these come with convex edges, as opposed to V-grinds like many factory knives have. They both require different sharpening techniques to maintain. I think the convex is easier, but that's just me. I just strope mine across coarse then finer sandpaper to after each use. Stones and diamond sharpeners will fundamentally change the edge from a convex to a V shape. But that's the way some folks like them anyways. It's a personal thing.

Sharpening a knife is more like changing the contrast on the tv. If you are afraid of messing it up, which is very hard to do without the aid of power tools, you could practice on cheap knives first.

Again thx for the Replys guys
I live in Kaneohe as well
Back to sharpening my Rat. i dont want to change the Edge. i sure have a few cheap Knives i could try and practice on . just none with a Convex edge .
The Wife and Work take up most of my time . so please excuse me if im willing to send out to get it done .

Alert the CDC! There's a rat infestation on Keneohe, HI.

Man, you've got a great resource right there where you live with Kalimalena. Do a search for his name either here or on the Busse forum and send him an email. He's totally cool, and an Old School Rat, and can get you straight about razoring out that Ratweiler. I'd love to see what he's got stashed in his safe. Knowing him he could probably show you the entire past line-up of every Busse and Rat made to date. Wouldn't hurt to drop him a email asking him if he'd meet up is all I'm saying. What are there like 8 people on that island? He probably lives next door to you. :D

Don't send it out whatever you do. Sharpening convex edges is super easy. You're not going to screw it up if that's your concern. You can do it. Just read that "keeping it sharp" link on swampshack.com (or ask your neighbor to show you ;) ).
