I couldn't find a good picture that really showed rat tail tang construction, so I drew one for you.
Below is a cross sectional representation of the component parts of a sword. (blade cut short)
Note that the quillion slips over the tang and fits over a small portion of the blade, the grip slips over the tang and butts against the quillion, and then the pommel slips over this and is peened in place.
Threaded pommels began to become common in the late 1700s and early 1800s. Most lower quality mass produced swords found today are screwed rather than peened.
