I like most everything about these medium duty Rat Traps except for one thing. Guess what that is?

Well, I don't care for the tip down carry either and apparently the owner of this knife doesn't either. Its here for a low rider drilled and tapped for tip up right hand carry. I'll get to it when I can.

Sorry for no scan I am having trouble with my scanner still. I managed to make it work briefly this morning but then it crapped out on me again. I'm working on it.

I've got other things I wanted to post from yesterday so bear with me.

This new thread is mostly to let you know I got the knive safe and sound just a bit ago Vance. Intersting that UPS delivered it in a USPS priority mail box. :D Don't think I've ever seen that before!

I tried a temporary tip up carry with the Rat Trap, but found the knife opened so easily that the tip would catch on my clothing and cut the edge of my pocket or nip my leg. I decided tip down was more wise for this particular knife. Of course, to each their own, and It is a great knife in its own right.

sounds good!

i'll be going outta town tomorrow & will be back next friday..

so if you have any questions i'll address them when i get back

thanks

Bumppo many folks and even manufacturers worry about gravity opening the knife in the pocket just as you describe but what I've found more often than not is that if the detent ball is placed properly this will be a non issue. I do agree though that if you got one that the detent wasn't doing its job properly well, yeah I'd move it back to tip down carry also.

There are many repeat offenders of this 'gravity knife' factor when it comes to liner locks. BenchMade is guilty of this quite often and their newer model Dejavoo folders are prime examples of knives with detent balls that are ineffective and what technically make the knife illegal to carry whether its in tip up or tip down mode and its probably why they come for tip down carry only. On every single one of these I've seen for work or owned myself the detent ball did not add any retention at all to keep the tip down in the folder when closed. It would be outright dangerous to carry one like this in tip up carry.

This Rat Trap here is not in the same league as those Dejavoos although you can flip it open. I think he'll be fine though. It doesn't fall open from gravity like these others I've seen.

Ok Vance. This one is fixed up. It will ship out in the morning to you.
By the way it looks like it blocks the lanyard hole a little in this shot. It doesn't though. I notched the clip at that spot so it straddles the hole making it clear to still use if one wanted to.

Thanks man.

Oh yeah. I knew it would work. I'll be sending mine in soon for the same treatment. That will make the RT just about perfect. Nice work, Steve.

I really like that. I,d like to know if the clip screws are in the steel
liner or just thru the G-10 scales. Also if you could tell me how much
to have it done because I don't like tip down carry.

Thanks, Wyatt

The Liner is a nested partial one in this folder. Idealy I'd like to have had both screws in the metal but as it is I got one threaded into the steel liner and the other through the G10. The liner does not got up far enough on the folder scale to allow it to be steel behind both.

This G10 you see being used on most of these productions is approx. 30 more glass filled so it actually holds threads quite well so long as you follow simple rules of thumb.

1) never overtighten the screws since they need only be snug to work.
2) never use loctite or super glue on the threads or in the hole because this will cause the threads made to pull out with the screw the first time you do move one or back it out.
3) don't make a habit of taking the clip on and off a whole lot.

Do this they last infefinitely.
