Does anyone know why the Rat Trap folder was discontinued? I know it ws made of S30V and I understand some companies had difficulty with the heat treatment of this steel and the resultant blades were prone to chipping.

I don't really know why, other than Swamp Rat was revamped and the Rat Trap was part of that original line, or at least that's the way I think of it. I have unsubstantiated theories, but I'm sure Eric can give us an official answer.

To me, S30V is a great choice for this type of knife. Improper heat treatments can leave any steel too hard or too soft, but I've never heard of any cases like this with Rat Traps. I've carried mine daily for 2 1/2 years with no problems.

S30V is one of those steels that is to be used for cutting. Many times people will try to chop, pry or do something else that it wasn't made for. That's usually when the bad things happen.

Hey Greg. I've got one S30V custom that is an EDC heat treated by Paul Boz. So far so good with that knife but I've never chopped anything and rarely cut anything with it. It just rides on my belt and waits for a rainy day.

It was "discontinued" as much as every other knife they make. At one time you were able to order them, wait 5 months, and get your knife. That time is over. They have since moved on to the next model; and changed the way they offer new knives.

I didnt extensively used my Rat trap,
but from what I've heard HT was decent (at least better than Spyderco's)

My Rat Trap is EDC...no issues...none.

It is in fact, my favorite folder of all time.

I've EDC'd my Rat Trap for more than two years now and I am completely satisfied with it.
In fact, I was so impressed with this knife when it came out that I sent three of them overseas to military friends of mine and they all love them. Can't get any better endorsement than that!

The Rat Trap was a great folder with many strong attributes. They are pretty expensive right now on the secondary market.

I think Gary probably hit the nail on the head.

Swamp Rat, Busse and Scrap Yard make production in runs. They make some, sell them and move on.

The Rat Trap is one from the past now.

I am prone to carrying sets. I had a Ratchet, got a HRLM, and so the only choice was to pay the freight for a Trap. No, it doesn't chip and S30V is a great steel that cuts noticeably beyond traditional steels. I edc the Trap at the expense of at least a dozen other similar knives. It will likely continue unless and until one is done in Infi. :) Regards, ss.
