all rats but big differences, l to r
gec horsecut walnut bone---gec acrylic fall harvest--kutmaster plastic--camillus tortise plastic--gec rat furtaker yellow rose bone.
if i was a trapper would probably go with camillus or kutmaster since animal legs are so small, however an xpert knife man might be at home with the more robust gecs.the only use i can see for the big wharny blade is to make initial cut before skinning a catfish. functional or not i must like the rat furtaker since i bought a bunch of them.

Nice collection.. I have always like the Camillus. I carried one of their Yello-Jacket for a long while as a kid.

Can you spot the 1 difference in these knives? Ok...so it was an easy spot the difference game. Two Cold Steel muskrats, one traditional, one set ip as a bird knife. Both in Carbon V.

Nice muskrats. Camillus did a great job on those Country Classics. I still kick myself for getting rid of mine.

OT, but did anyone every find the Ozark Hunter lockback model? Bearclawchrislappe, didn't you find one?

Queen does a very decent single spring 'Rat in their Amber Bone. Goes well in the pocket.
I like that first GEC a lot Dennis, they know how to do bone alright.

Dennis, or anyone else with muskrat experience: is there any benefit or advantage to the blade angle (compared to the frame) of the middle kutmaster, over the straighter blades, as in the yellow rose furtaker?

Not that you stab a lot with a slippie, but if you did (to puncture hide, or such), then the angled blade would close down on your fingers much easier than a straight (lined up) blade would.

OK It's been a while since I displayed my ignorance, so here goes a question:

What is the purpose of a muskrat with identical blades? I really like the look, but have always wondered about the need for 2 duplicate blades.

Is it to have a "spare" sharp blade when the first blade dulls down?

Thanks

Two is always better than one, everyone knows that! :D W.C. Fields put it well when he said, "I'd rather have two women of 21 each, than one woman of 42." ;)

Just kidding, but I've thought the same thing. That's why my first and only moose/muskrat to date is the yellow rose GEC furtaker. Two different blades makes it for me.

I asked that same question here once, and, yup, that was the generally accepted reason. People used the design a lot on trap lines back in the day, so when the first blade got dull skinning... er... muskrat... the second one could be brought out to finish the job without having to carry a second knife, or a stone.

black mamba the kutmaster has a defective 2nd blade . i have 2 identical knives & the other one in bone is'nt mint so i did'nt show it. these blades are so slim & pointy thst stabbing is.nt done , you just push them into the animal. a few facts on trapping
1- some lines are ran by foot & the catch if not too big is thrown into a wicker ash pack basket.2 if you pick up too many beaver ,which are heavier; then some hide removal is done on site
3- same blades were idea for the animal size [if not bigger than a beaver] this kept a trapper from taking the time to sharpen since he might have 2 more miles to complete line.
4-- trappers taking wolves, lynx, yotes & wolverine usually were on sleds or snow machines since these animals required so much time to skin & it was preferred done at cabin or home especioally since a long time on a carcuss could mean a bear would be drawn to the catch. [not welcome]
trappers are truly the" last of the mountain men"since it takes a real hardy person to spend so much time in super cold places resettig traps ,cleaning & processing {stretching furs].usually these guys are by themsevles. sometimes hiking with heavy equipment with snow shoes on.fur in the milder climates is poor quality so the colder the environment the better the fur quality.
