RAT3 with no logo?

I've acquired an older (Ontario Made) RAT3 in a trade recently. It has the gray coated finish with black handles. I'm trying to figure out what blade steel it has. I'm almost positive it's D2 but I've seen these older models advertised in 1095 as well.

While searching, I found every other picture has the triangle Randall logo on the blade, mine does not. there are no markings whatsoever either engraved or stamped into the blade (though there is a small "R" in a circle stamped into the handle near the screw closest to the lanyard hole).

Any info?

The R means it was a second. I'm not sure but I don't think Ontario put a logo on some of the seconds.

Ah. Would have been nice knowing that before I committed to the trade. That said, I can't find anything wrong with the knife other than a spec of the coating flaking off on the spine. No biggie.

Any info on blade steel? D2?

I said I wouldn't own Ontario stuff after what they've done but this is still a good design from back when you guys were involved. I won't ever purchase anything from them but these knives still need to be used! :)

Thanks for the info Jeff.

Should be D2 steel if it has a gray powder coat.

Sounds like the one I owned at one time,RAT3 D2 no markings ,with small paint chipping on spine from firesteel usage, little R burnt into right hand scale. did it have a Tan sheath with boot clip or Green sheath? (I had so many,)I traded one ealier this year but I informed the trade person it was a factory second.Sorry to hear you was led astray but the mis-information

I'm not worried about it. The knife is solid. Had Jeff said the R meant super secret top shelf production run I would have believed him. Thing looks perfect to me. Mine has a black sheath.
