Why not electroless nickel? It should hold up better than any paint.
Here is an offer:
One ESTABLISHED maker can send me a blade. I will plate it free of charge and return it for testing. The blade must be carbon steel, heat treated, and finished. By finished, I mean ready to handle. The blade should be 6" long overall-or less. I am not currently set up for longer pieces, though I would do so if testing proves the plating a viable option.
Please understand, the finish you send the blade with, will be the finish it has when you get it back. Satin, blasted, high polish-plating should not change the surface texture of the blade.
EN will scratch, and the exposed edge will have no plating-just as with painting.

Well, I'm certainly not established! But this sounds really cool and it's a very nice offer, Bill:thumbup:

I'm really looking forward to seeing how the coating looks on a blade, so somebody get one sent in to Bill quick!!:D

Nickel plating is metallic silver, with a yellowish tint. I can also do cobalt, which is whiter-like chrome.

While in the gunsmithing business I had many firearm parts, including receivers, frames electroless nickel plated and can say I think this would be a very viable alternative to other blade coating processes. My understanding is that electoless nickel plating is much much thinner than chrome plating, so edge chipping or flaking would not be a concern.

I hope this goes well for you Bill,

Ken
