so i emailed wr case to find out what the steels are and hardness....

they didn't answer the hardness part of the question....but...

the cv chrome vanadium steel - is in fact "a modified 1095 with chrome and vanadium" added.

the tru-sharp - is 420hc.

so there you go. now what would be interesting is when the change came from when they used the 1085 steel to this 1095 crovan type steel. thanks to Frank we know in the mid to late 60's they used a 1085 version steel. also thanks to Frank he did a hardness test on one of the more modern blades and if i remember correctly it was around 54?

anyone have any insight on when the carbon steel change was made or for that matter if lots 'o' changes were made between these many decades?

My 8 dot(1982) 6318HP's blade turned black almost immediately upon slicing some potatos. My 4 year old peanuts blades just turn gray blue with other colors that look like an oil slick.I asked the Case rep at the Spirit Of Steel show in Knoxville last August which had changed, the potato, or the steel. He had no answer.

Maybe the older knife has the 1085 and the newer one has the new 1095 crovan?

I have an 80T and the blades on it turn black like the older Case blades.

I remember men of my grandfathers generation calling the steel in Case knives black steel.

Not sure if patina color is really indicative of anything, but it has also been my experience that 1095 turns blue/gray with some various "oil-slick" colors...after a while it gets that black color, though.

Frosty

I thought for certain that Case currently used 1085 in their CV. It seems they've changed, I guess I'm a little late to the party:o.

Since Case sells their steel by their brand name the type of steel can change at anytime w/o consumer knowledge. Just like with Busse's Infisteel, you buy the company's name and reputation not the steel.

Remeber, it ain't just the steel but also the heat treat and edge geometry that provides the performance.

Case also makes (or made) knives in BG42, ATS34 and 154CM.
