OK, let me try another route...anybody got both of these and what do you think? I read high priae for both, and especially the rat. I have researched but can't find definitive definitions of weights and grinds. I would like a blade of this length and style that could do some light chopping and splitting, yet still be a good slicer: That's correct, I want an all-around knife. I do understand that blade geometry is just as important as width for slicing and such. Somebody help me, so I can choose one before it is too late for factory prices. Thanks.cwd

Hi, and welcome to the madness. I have both and even though I love the handles on the 511, the RMD is the one I would go with. It is thick enough to pry and baton and yet still cuts great.

The choil on the 511 is just a little too small for me, i prefer the rmd. You could round off the pointed edge a bit and make it a little bigger if you go that route.

Either way you can't go wrong,

I have had both and I will never get rid of the RMD. My big mits just didnt fit the 511. The RMD is my favorite of the entire Busse family line. Period.
 
Thanks for the input, consistent with what I had been reading about the 'Du. I just love how that 511 looks, specially the tan version.

I have a Mil Overrun 511 and 3 Ratmandus (#4 is on order to ship with my Rucki). I like the beefier blade and larger grips of the Ratmandu. You can't go wrong with either, totally personal preference.
 
I also have both, of the 2 I would go ratmandu. if you have bigger hands the rat is way better.I use the 511 in wet cold conditions and the du for every thing in between. the rat is a legend!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
 
depends on your hand size, I am 5'11" and the 511 handle is the perfect size, if my hand was any bigger the handle would be too small.

I bought a ratmandu for my dad and its an awesome blade, even though I love res-c but I would say go for the RMD.:thumbup:
 
Well, I went with...neither one. Bought a slightly customized Deux from the exchange. In additon to the modifications, I like the full flat grind on this blade...still intrigued by that 511, though, maybe will have some CHRISTMAS cash left over...
 
Yep. I have 4 RMDs & 2 HRLMs. Gave 2 SR wardens & 2 Griswold cast iron skillets away for presents. Still have 2 Wardens. And just ordered a 511 and 2 Scrapivores.
It's magic. Can't get enough!

Man! Got my yard mess today. Sweet is the word. 511 & 2 Scrapivores. Damn, they're sweet. Mashed cat combos.
