My brother picked up an RMD at the recent Custom Knife show in Jersey. I think it was Garth who explained a slight difference in the model he got. If I remember correctly, they were Mil over runs that were requested to have a slightly thicker tip for penetration. Sure enough, when we got home, I compared his new RMD to my older one. His is actually slightly longer with the tip being pointier, and having a bit more belly to it. (on top of being slightly thicker) I don't have pics, but I illustrated it, in the graphic below.

Does anyone else have one like this? I'd prefer mine to be similar, but I'm wondering if it will be problematic when he tries to order Kydex from the guys with Ratmandu templates already made.

ive recieved a couple of different ones from the factory a few months ago.2 had very blunt thick tips.and 2 were much thinner and i kept the thinner ones.in fact i sent one back to be re-sharpened but it was still too thick.i thought it was due to a inconsistency in the blanks.

I love the new blade shape!
It's similar to my dssf which is also kind of tanto-ish.
I've been thinking from some time about buying a RMD. With that new blade shape I would not hesitate any longer.

It is almost "tanto-ish". Where the old blade had a swooping curve from belly to tip, the newer RMD has a straight section right after the belly, making for a very pointy knife.

The point on my RMD's are very thick. I sharpened the spine on one of them and it makes a world of a difference in penetration ability.

Would love to see pics of each side by side. I have two, but they both have a nice curve from belly to tip.

I would be very interested in seeing this since I am just about to pull the trigger on a RMD

If you order an RMD, it won't come that way. The knife in question was sold as a Mil overrun at a Custom Knife Show, not as a regular production piece. If Eric had a bunch of Mil overruns for sale, you can bet there would either be a huge announcement, or that they would only sell them in either a ganza, or in person at the shows.

If you want one like this, you might want to find a proxy for the upcoming shows to keep an eye open for you. A lot of stuff hits the shows that isn't in regular production.

All that said, I had a similar experience. I purchased 2 Swamp Wardens at the same time, and one day had them side by side. I noticed the same thing, except both blades are the same length. Since they are the only SWs that I've ever seen, I couldn't tell you which is the "correct" version. I can tell you, however, that the "tanto" version out-cuts the other on free-hanging zip-lock bags.

Also, what my sketch doesn't show is the difference in the clip, or "swedge". His clip has a squared off edge (spine edge) where mine is beveled slightly and then transitions to a rounded spine.

Here is my picture of the tips of a first gen RMD and a latter model.

The first gen has a false swege, the "knife show" RMD has a thicker flat clip. This is not a current RMD, although I thought the new ones also had a flat spine.

You got yours from a recent show? Can you take a pic of the knives side by side or even with the older RMD laying on top of the new one to show the difference in tip length. My bro has been away since I posted this thread so I couldn't take pictures of his knife.

I have placed the two knives side by side and if there is any difference in length or belly I cannot see it or it is very minor. My newer knife is from the Eugene knife show about two or three years ago. Not a recent knife show.

Ok sorry its been so long. I finally got some pics of the two variations of RMDs. You can see how the coated rmd is much pointier. It has a straight edge right before the tip. My older typical rmd is rounded to the tip

i have 2 rmd's left from the recent release.they look just like that.i had 4 and 2 were thick and blunt at the tip and i got rid of them.kept the nice pointy ones.ill post a picture soon:thumbup:.

heres mine,,,i was a little disappointed in the inconsistency of the grinds i got on my rmds.so i ended up keeping the 2 best ones.they look very similar to the one you are talking about.and these were purchased directly from swamp rat online.
