Junior Spark and I went for a hike in the woods the other day. We were working on our Map and Compass training. He took us right tho the location from about a mile away. Not bad for a rookie. Here is the Yorkville Goldmine, and pictures of the area.

We saw some bats in the tunnel, and one appeared to be covered in a crystaline coating. I thought it was salt, but it wasn't. The upper portion of the tunnel wall was lined with the stuff. Does anyone know what it is?

Great pics! I've been meaning to work on my map reading skills as well. It'll be this years summer project.

Check out that bug to the left...how big was that thing?

Great pics btw:thumbup:

We called them spider crickets and they were freaking everywhere in Jersey. The body on them gets to be about the size of your pinky. I'm glad to have not found any yet in Texas.

Could it be a form of mold you think? I heard a story the other night where they have this type of mold or some growth on bats, it's infecting them in some parts of the country and threatens to kill off entire colonies. Perhaps you should notify your local DNR about that.

Yeah, we have them in Maryland. We call them Sprickets and I'm not very fond of them either.

The crystaline stuff you were seeing was likely Potassium Nitrate--Salt Peter! During the Revolutionary and Civil Wars it was mined from caves for the production of gun powder. Usually you find it several layers deep in the floor of the cave--its a by-product of centuries of bat guano.

I knew they manufactured gunpowder from bat crap, I just didn't know it crystallized like that! That's better than boiling down poop! :D
