Hey everybody, I just recieved my BM 556 Plain Edge Mini-Griptillan. The spring in the Axis lock seems to rattle in the closed postion, is this normal?

It might be the sleeve-thing on the stop pin; my 550 rattles closed when tilted from side to side. Does it rattle when open? If not, it's most likely that stop pin.

It rattles when titled from side to side and a little bit up and down only in the closed postion. No problems with the lock, no blade play. I'm not too farmilar with the Axis lock though so I'm not sure. It might be the stop pin.

My bet is that it's the stop pin. There is a "load" on the Axis lock at all times, so I don't think it is likely to produce any rattle. I've heard of one or two other situations like yours. It does not affect performance in any way.

Try appying pressure to the stop-pin (lodging a cotton swab against it should work) and then check for the rattle. While it won't solve the problem, it will narrow down what it is and why you'll live with it or send it back.

Yep, its the stopping pin. I have a cotton swab lodged beside the stopping pin as I am typing this. It isn't rattling. I don't think it effects it at all, I can live with it. It makes it unique, but if causes any problems I will have to return it to Benchmade for repairs/replacement.

I think that the sleeve is just there to bolster the strength of the stopping pin without adding too much extra weight, so it shouldn't affect the function of your knife (funny word "shouldn't"). I noticed that my 710HS has that same rattle.

The solution? Buy an 806D2. Sure, it's more expensive than a 556 and has less belly and a hair less edge-retention than a 710HS, but it doesn't rattle! That's right, if you're feeling an Edgar Allen Poe 'Telltale Heart' moment with every footfall, buy the 806D2. It won't rattle, it's handle exudes safety and confidence, it's blade will hold a wicked edge, and its thumbramp will feel like a silly joke compared to the thumbramps of the Griptillian and Spyderco's Native. It's just that good.

I have something else that is wondering me, the Axis lock lock bar (on the handle) on one side it is rougher then the other side. Its rough on the only side I use so its a bitch and annoying is this common? I've only had it for about 14 hours as we speak so its not because of wear. Is this common?
