I helped with a dog club's snake avoidance clinic this past weekend .
I thought it would be interesing to put some Buck knives in front of a passive
rattlesnake while waiting for the handler and next dog to get ready to pass
my station. The snake would rattle and flick it's tongue out when I laid each knife in front of it.

The rattlesnakes fangs were removed and the mouth was sutured shut by a vet.
They are fed a saucer of milk for a few months until sutures come out and fangs regrow.

Good pics, and informative. I didn't realize snakes regrew their fangs lol.

Nice photos Earl. It's that time of year the buzz tails start crawling around.I've seen people, dogs and horses get bit.I got bit once myself back in 1979 and thank God I was wearing thick leather boots.I was out rabbit hunting and as I walked past a mesquite bush wham.Didn't get any rabbit that day but the snake tasted mighty good.

Almost forgot,I skinned and dressed him with my Buck 110 and it did a great job!Gave the skin and rattle to my wife's little brother, nothing went to waste.

I found this:

Q. What happens if a rattlesnake breaks a fang?

A. Rattlesnake fangs are continuously lost and replaced every six to ten weeks, much the same way shark teeth are replaced with new ones. If a rattlesnake breaks a fang as a result of a strike or other injury, it is simply replaced with the next available fang.

I glad to see these courses being taught. It's good for the dogs and the snakes.

Ok Earl, that explains that one . We won't see rattlers here for months like until June . It snowed here today . DM

Very nice shots, and an interesting bit of trivia about Rattlesnakes regrowing their fangs. :)

Rattlesnakes have disagreed with Buck Knives for years...
I used to have that exact poster. As you know, it came off a box that contained Nocona Boots. (I still have a pair, but not the poster)
I sure like that poster.
PS, Rattlesnake meat is not bad. ;)

I'll bet you'd a had to change your pants if he'd a struck while you were placing the knife in front of him. Or at least hurt yourself trying to get away.:D

One year on my birthday my Dad took us camping and squirrel hunting. I shot a 66" long diamond back that afternoon so Dad and I skin't him for supper. Mind you I shot his head off with a 12ga then cut a little more off behind that (at that time I didn't know where the glands were).
Anyway Dad was hold'n him about 8" or so down from that as I had him skinned about halfway, the blunt end of him struck dad in the arm and he thought he was had. Between the snake striking and Dad jumping my cousin just about left the camp.:D

So what exactly are you teaching the dogs in this exercise? I've heard many times of a dog holding point on a rattler.
