rattling leek

i was cleaning some of my knives this morning when i noticed that my leek was rattling. i checked the lock, and it's totally secure. the pocket clip isn't loose. speedsafe works perfectly, and there's no blade play either horizontally or vertically; plus, the rattling only happens when the knife is open.

unfortunately, i don't have the propper tools to open it up and take a look at the inside. has anyone else experienced this?

What motions do you put it through when making the noise? It could very well be the safety like trimcut mentioned.

the safety switch is totally fine.

it rattles just from moving around, but it's very faint. i can heard it most clearly if i flick my wrist like you would do when chopping with a larger knife or playing the drums.

Most likely something is moving around in the scale with the torsion bar (there is open space in there). Could be a pebble or some crap in there. Go to Sears and get their precision multi screwdriver tool (has a clear plastic handle) which has all the proper torx bits to dismantle just about every knife.

Knife open + rattle = torsion bar problem....sorta.

You probably just need to take it apart and put it back together. Since you are going to take it apart anyway you might as well contact Kershaw and have them send you some new torsion bars.

As for the right tool.... go to your favorite, local home improvement warehouse and pick up the little 6 dollar torsion driver they have there. I forget the brand names..... they are the same driver just relabeled. It has 8 or 10 (can't remember) popular torsion bit sizes and will cover you for most any knife work you will likely have to do.

If the safety is too loose (not likely the source of the rattle but maybe) just take a philips screwdriver and tighten it to you liking.

Hope this helps.

There's no tension on the torsion bar when open... so it can move
around a little. No harm will come of this but if it really bothers you,
do as Spiral suggested and open it up, put a little grease in the torsion
bar cavity and the rattle will be gone. The torx bits are #6 and #8.

mine came greased, but I could see that if motion was not slowed somewhat in the torsion bar cavity that it would cause a faint rattle.

I bought 3 Leek CB for 2 friends and me; all 3 came greased and very slow. I took them apart and cleaned them out and now they are just as fast as my old 2003 Leek but they rattle when open. My old one doesn't rattle, but I'm not worried.

If it starts bugging me I'll try to put an rubber bushing somewhere on the torsion bar but for now I wont bother.

They all come with lube in the torsion bar cavity, some just have a
little more then others.

Still don't know why people are shaking there Leeks up and down all the time. ;) :D

Storing extra potential energy in the torsion bar, duh!
Would'a figured you'd know that.

How else to you get that extra loud "thwak!" out of them without shaking them up first? ;)

I just checked my two Leeks, and they both make a rattling noise when shaking them. They both work fine by the way.

Ok, now I have to get all my Leeks out and start shaking the hell out of'em.
Thanks for the tip KD. ;) :D
