ive noticed alot of my speed assist kershaws rattling in the open position. when the torsion bars are loaded (blade closed) they dont make a noise but once open they can be quite loud. Anyone have any thoughts? i was going to do a search on this but im not allowed.

The torsion bar is under tension when the knife is closed, which is the magic behind the Speedsafe. When the knife is open the tension is gone from the bar and sometimes it can rattle. Some are more noisy than others though.

MY THEORY: It might have something to do with the amount of lubricant is in the Speedsafe chamber. If there is enough lubricant, it prevents the bar from jiggling.

THis has been brought up numerous times, but it is NOT a defect, unless the torsion bar is broken. If its broken, you'll know, because the assist-open won't work.

thanks thats what i figured. does kershaw themselves recommend a paticular lube for there speed assist knives?

Many are quiet and if you notice they have some grease packed in there with them that aids in hushing the rattle. I've noted this more than once when I was trying to determine why one was silent when another of the same model was not. I guess you could ask them what they use at Kershaw and use that or maybe just pack in some gun grease or something like that and see if it helps. Miltec would probably help but I can't say for sure. Whatever you use, so long as it doesn't prove to be so strong that it inhibits the movement action for for the spring to do its job it should be fine.
