I recently got an A blade Raven and i had some questions i would like to ask about it. I have never had an actual Emerson before, but i always imagiend the thumb disc to be an actual disc. The one on my Raven has the dges sort of cut off ,so its not a circle, more of a rectangle with two sides rounded. Is this how they are? Also, there is no mention of the steel used on the blade. Is this also normal, because 154cm is standard and thus, no need to mention it? The years under the Emerson logo says 97. With this in mind, is there anything i should look for that would mark the knife out as genuine or not genuine? Thanks for any and all help.

Dear Sir,

I believe that your Raven is genuine. We only used the flattened thumb disc on the Raven and Specwar models when customers told us that they had a little trouble finding the disc in a hurry. It made the disc stick out farther.

The steel is ATS-34. We used it until Crucible Industries approached us to see if we would use 154-CM if they made it for us. ATS-34 was a Japanese copy of 154-CM.

1997 was the first year of the production company, Emerson Knives, Inc. You have one of those first year, knives. They are getting quite rare.

Best Regards,

Ernest Emerson

Didn't expect to hear from the man himself. Damn! Just in case Mr. Emerson is still around here to read this in the near future, i have a couple of other questions that i sent via the website a week or so ago and haven't heard back yet. The blade is black coated. If i sent it in to you guys, could i get it professionally removed? This next question is a long shot i know, but are there any Blackbirds in A blade style lurking around in a back room or something that i could trade this in for? I would be more than willing to make up any price difference. I just really love the g-10 that i have felt when perusing Emerson knives at shops and shows. Thanks again for the direct response.

I got an answer back from Emerson knives today and it made me rethink the whole removing the coating thing. I will just be patient and wait for a satin finish to pop up somewhere. So i am just gonna put this knife up for trade. Thanks to Mr. Emerson for the help.
