Knife makers often "Stock" raw materials to last them
quite a while, or when they get to lay hands on some
premium quality stuff. These can be anything from bars of quality
steel, stag, pearl or fossilized Mammoth and ancient ivory.

I am curious to see some of these "stashes", if knifemakers
do not mind showing them.... :)

Here for starters is part of Michael and Andre Andersson's (Sweden)
stock of Mammoth ivory...

All the best,

Damm!! That's a lot of Ivory!!

Karl, I think you should send your Ol pal Ricky some of that delicious steel:D

amazing how Karl gets those nice clean knives from all that rusty old metal just lying around waiting to find its way to the scrap heap.

Here are some beautiful blocks of stabilized and color
impregnated wood that I found in Edmund Davidson's
workshop.
Edmund often uses stabilized wood as handle material for
his Full Integral knives. He also likes to use desert ironwood
and elephant ivory.

All the best,

My wife saw this picture and burst out laughing.

If you look at it again you might notice the unfortunate placement of the man's head in front of the tusks....giving him a pair of horns.

Nice visual display.

I personally cringe at the thought of anyone cutting up an intact full mammoth tusk, for use in knife scales.

Seems like a waste of such a grand historic relic. - Hopefully that is a display piece only.

It's not a full tusk, just the lower half - look at the corner you can see at top right (also, look how it's hung and balanced - what you can see is almost all of it); nevertheless, considering how it's presented, I don't think it's in imminent danger of getting cut up.

I laughed at that as soon as I saw the picture!!

Well guys, if you check Andre Andersson's smile, and you
would know a little about his and his father's sense of humor,
you would also understand how they planned this little joke
between themselves...

I've never taken photos of my stash of material but I hold a large inventory of stag and desert ironwood in house at all times because I like working with them.

My largest stash is roughly about 2 tons of wrought iron anchor chain, I will have to find my pics.

Here is my stash. Its mostly walnut. I actually pull it off of some old lawnmower crates, so I get it free, and it looks beautiful when I'm done, as you can see on the knife. All I have to do is cut it up to remove the nails and they come in just the right sizes for handle scales, plus, I burn the pieces with the nails in them in my forge.

That is clever recycling at its best... :)

OK... you wanted to see stash. Here's my private reserve of ancient walrus ivory. I live where they grow the stuff, I actually paid high retail for most of this. Cant get it any other way. Please don't beat up on me cause I'm a dealer, dealers are people too:D. None of this is for sale, please do not PM me about it. It's exciting to see others peoples stashes, lets see some more, how about narwhal, elephant, sambar stag.
